I walked myself to school in Brooklyn through what is now a historic district from the age of 7 It's sad that anyone would vote to preserve unsafe streets and deny that freedom to kids today VOTE YES ON 3
Village Preservation recommends a “NO” on ballot question no. 3, which NYC voters will soon be deciding upon. Find out why we think this will lead to worse outcomes for neighborhoods + city, removing important checks + balances from decision-making: villagepreservation.org/camp…

I encourage people to watch the video and hear for themselves that El-Sayed says he “absolutely” denounces the Muslim Brotherhood, and goes on to explain that he supports the Constitution. What’s more newsworthy is a CBS reporter trafficking in bigoted disinformation.

Listening to @UpFirst podcast increases trust in podcast news + NPR but that doesn’t spill over into trust in news more generally. Glad this paper w/ @junghwanyang @simonsaysnothin @p_barbera is out!
Randomizing uptake of NPR's @UpFirst podcast for 5 days increases news consumption & knowledge of events (esp. among more right-leaning voters), trust in NPR, etc but not trust in the news more generally; no effect on attitudes or political beliefs. An @andyguess et al. joint

Query for poli sci faculty: we are considering implementing Zoom interviews during our grad admissions process this year. I was just wondering if your department had implemented interviews, and if so, how did you implement them, and how has the process gone? Thanks in advance.

Interesting and welcome trial balloon here: - LLM use is fine/assumed for authors - Eds require an LLM "report" on the qualities of the manuscript which is provided to them by the authors based on a template the Eds design.

Don't forget to add $6 (+ sales tax) for a "SmarteCarte" to hold your luggage!
Why do we charge nearly 12 bucks for public transit from JFK? The AirTrain is driverless + fully automated, yet it’s $8.75 for just a few stops, then $3 more for the subway. We should be welcoming people to NYC, not ripping them off. Got back from Berlin where it’s 5 Euros total

The entire political leadership of this country has had its brain fried by the internet.
A letter from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, and a member of the Senate Finance Committee:

They're old enough to remember the original Port Huron Statement, not the compromised second draft.
A full auditorium for Abdul El-Sayed in the Republican-leaning Port Huron, with a predominately older crowd. Margie Collins, 77, and Pat Kreiner, 72, waited over an hour outside to get into the event, and told me their children first got them to support El-Sayed.

Our article with @grigopop and @jacobtucker is now out in @bjpols! This has been a very long journey from the initial draft to publication, so we are very excited 😀 I'll summarize our findings in the next few of posts in the thread. cambridge.org/core/journals/…

There are a lot of eyes on Cornell right now. It’s moments like this where having an independent student press is most important, but doing that work has never been more difficult. Please support The Cornell Sun in its mission for truth and accountability. cornellsun.com/page/donate

White nationalism has become more visible in American life, especially online. Yet we know surprisingly little about how many white Americans explicitly endorse it. In a new @Nature paper with Patrick Egan and Joshua Tucker, we examine its prevalence and predictors.

When you can't get IRB ethics approval from the university but you really want to do a study, I guess you can just go to Netflix now
EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has announced "The New Stanford Prison Experiment," an unscripted series streaming Oct. 21. "Thirty willing participants enter a real prison and are randomly assigned as guards or prisoners. Thrust into a system of power, hierarchy, and control, they’ll discover whether ordinary people inevitably conform to the roles they’re given—or whether empathy, morality, and individuality can withstand the forces pushing them in the opposite direction. As the pressure builds and the balance of power begins to shift, the central question feels more urgent than ever: Does power corrupt?" wp.me/pc8uak-1lHKzp

Nearly every day toward the end of my tenure at The Washington Post, someone would complain to me about Jeff Bezos' changes. His decimation of the local news team. His abandonment of DC sports coverage. The shriveled Bezos opinion page, with the ideological diversity of a doorknob. Today, The Washington Sun launches. It has made enormous new investments: +110 newsroom staff; DC's legendary food columnist; truly the best DMV reporters; a beloved weather blog; a growing roster of columnists; tons of worldclass reporters across many national beats; and also me. The Washington Sun will not be perfect. We will write stories that you find annoying, dumb, or misinformed. I will make mistakes (& tell me if I do - [email protected]!). But at a time where investments in reporting are evaporating, I'm so excited The Sun is hiring real journalists doing real reporting. If you want to help, I would love if you signed up for our (free!) newsletters, which routinely get genuinely rave reviews: National coverage: washingtonsun.com/account/ne… Local coverage: washingtonsun.com/metro-news…

The Senate committee responsible for commerce and technology policy has zero hearings on AI scheduled for the next 4 months. The committee's top priority is, instead, the Protect College Sports Act.
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

The smuggled implication (that "changing the subject" to xrisk distracts from immediate harms) is false: in fact it raises people's concern about immediate harm a little more than talking about immediate harms does
Replying to @sapinker
As Newport points out, harping on doom for the species changes the subject from immediate and obvious threats from AI, such as enabling bioterrorism, undermining truth-seeking institutions, and breaching cybersecurity.
