Back from Greenland (via Reykjavik Iceland) - leading my annual program about climate change and rising sea level. The personal experience defies description, but even the airplane seat map helps put the scale in perspective. risingseasinstitute.org/gree…

Very well done video showing the simultaneous, compound climate shocks going on all over the World. If people could only see how much extreme weather is happening daily in all parts of the World, they’d understand that we are way off kilter.

Just attending a 3-day workshop on the danger of abrupt ocean circulation changes. Discussions are quite worrying. E.g. in 35 to 45 % of high quality models, convection in the open North Atlantic collapses in the 2030s due to #globalheating. -> Major climate disruption. ☹️

February continues Earth's record warm streak axios.com/2024/02/20/februar… Hard to overstate how ominous these record global temperatures are. Watch this for the next several months, to see if the dramatic up trend persists. More heat > glacial melting > higher global sea level.

What's beyond Code UFB? Yesterday, a new record-high for the global sea-surface temperature was reached at 21.12°C, beating the previous record of 21.10°C. New records should continue almost daily for about the next six weeks, please forgive me if I don't report them all.

Great piece in @Nature today exploring if its too late to keep warming below 1.5C (yes, at least without overshoot) but also highlighting the accelerating energy transition that is occurring worldwide. I was happy to help with a few figures in the piece: nature.com/immersive/d41586-…

"These dynamics are not included in models, & if we were to include them, it would increase projections of sea level rise by up to 200% – not just for Petermann but for all glaciers ending in the ocean, which is most of northern Greenland & all of Antarctica.” -Prof. Eric Rignot
We could be vastly underestimating future sea level rise... Read more in this article featuring work from ESS Professor Eric Rignot(@erignot) and researchers at NASA JPL: news.uci.edu/2023/05/08/uc-i…

Sea level rise is accelerating. Note that this 3.4 mm/year is the mean for the full satellite data record from 1993 to present. For the last few years, the rate is approaching 5 mm/yr.
Global sea level rise and its accelerating rate... 🌊 First update now in for 2023 from sealevel.colorado.edu/.

Yesterday was the first day CO₂ at Mauna Loa was 425 ppm. This is: -likely the first time in the past 800,000 years. -possibly not seen in over 3 million years (mid-pliocene warm period). -A CO₂ forcing equal to 2.5-4°C of warming and 5-25 meters higher global sea level.
