My take on Californiaās āOne-Timeā Billionaire Tax. Itās much worse than it looks.
š Will it pass? Yes, likely.
It only needs 50%+1 voter approval. SEIU + CTA have done this beforeāProp 55 won 63% in 2016.
āļø Will it get tied up in litigation?
Almost certainly. Retroactive wealth tax on a tax type CA has never had = due process challenges. Billionaires have the legal budgets for years of fights.
š But itās clearly ⦠only the start. The goal is an annual tax, not one-time. And the target is $25m-50m net worth folks, including illiquid foldings (early stage founders raising a Series B).
The āone-timeā framing is strategic, not terminal.
The same coalition (CTA, CFT, SEIU) already has AB 259 writtenāan >annual< 1% wealth tax at a >$50M threshold<, with plans to go to $25M. Itās been introduced 3 years running.
The one-time tax removes the constitutional barrier. Once thatās gone, the annual version becomes a much easier ballot measure.
š CA Policy Center said: āIf SEIU hopes to keep Medi-Cal spending growing, it may need to place repeated wealth taxes on the ballotāpotentially lowering the threshold as billionaires flee.ā
The real risk for founders:
At $1B, youāre taxing ~200 people. At $50M, youāre taxing 23,000 householdsāincluding most successful founders on paper before any liquidity event.
The rational move isnāt to leave when you hit the threshold. Itās to leaveāor never incorporate in CAābefore you get anywhere close.
āļø Net net: it will make sense to leave before the Series B.
Vinod Khosla nailed it: āEven people who donāt expect this initiative to pass are still planning to leave because there will be another one.ā
The one-time tax is the constitutional Trojan horse. The annual tax ā at a much lower threshold ā is already waiting inside.

I donāt think people realize an entire generation of young builders are watching āimpossibleā happen daily.
Donāt underestimate inspiration.
America is just getting started.
Progress, for many, still means waking up and having to push - hard.
Exerting effort and willpower to move the ball down the field across life, work, health.
š§² But a prosperous, well-designed existence doesnāt feel like pushing. It feels like PULL! A brief thread... š§µ
1. It starts with clear beliefs and self-identity.
2. Layering in supporting habits, which come to reinforce that identity on autopilot.
3. And adopting + iterating on hyper-intentional systems & technologies that incrementally make the right choices easier than the wrong ones.
The compounding result when done with consistency? A fulfilling life that pulls you forward by default - a more Automated Life ā¾ļø
#LifeAutomation #LifeOperatingSystems #MaximizedLife #IntentionalLiving #ZoneOfGenius
āļøLife flows forward when the various systems & environment around you are set up to nudge you - gently but relentlessly - toward your zone of genius. Toward time spent on what you're best at and enjoy most. Momentum rolls downhill daily toward the identity & lifestyle you want.

The single biggest question in the world right now is: How is Elon Musk so effective?
Marc Andreessen gives some nice personal anecdotes of what he's seen Elon do.
America is full of good-hearted, open-minded humans. As much as negative news networks, social media algorithms, & political parties contort their influence to enrage & divide, the fact remains... we hold the immense privilege to live in greatest country this world has ever seen.
To the West Virginians who have put their trust in me and fought side by side to make our state better ā it has been an honor of my life to serve you. Thank you. My statement on my political future:
Manchin: I Will Not Seek Re-Election, I Will Fight To Unite The Middle
I know our country isnāt as divided as Washington wants us to believe. We share common values of family, freedom, democracy, dignity and a belief that together we can overcome any challenge.

It's the creator's job to hide complexity from the consumer.
Take writing. As a writer, your task is to simplify and distill your message until you're left with only the essence of what you're trying to say.
The reader's experience should be frictionless. The sentences should flow. The structure should be intuitive. Getting there requires a lot of editing, deleting, and rearranging that the reader will never appreciate āĀ and that's the point.
This leads to the Paradox of Creativity: Your work is done when it looks so simple that the consumer thinks they could've done it, which means they won't appreciate how hard you worked.

We have $30 trillion of debt.
Politicians have somehow convinced themselves it doesn't matter, but don't let them convince you of that--it's not true.
We are planning to add a trillion more each year.
We are on a very bad path, and the only good way out is economic growth.
