Just came across an old email about the laws regulating CMOs in Germany. I’m so glad the Urheberrechtswahrnehmungsgesetz was replaced by the Verwertungsgesellschaftengesetz in 2016, it’s so much easier to say!

Marina Hyde with a new contender for best article of the generative AI era. “And look, no offence to Sora’s ‘creators’. I often walk through art galleries and realise the stuff on the walls would be so much better if I simply stole it and drew hilarious penises on it or whatever, and that they wouldn’t have made it publicly viewable if they didn’t want that.” Please please read the whole thing, every line is a belter. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

Copyright law is not complicated at all. If you want to use an author's work you need to ask for permission. If you use it without permission you're breaking the law. It's so simple. It'll be incredibly difficult for us, and for other affected industries, to take on Meta, but we'll have a good go! (Btw if you don't really care, that's ok, you don't need to tell me. Use that energy to fight for things you do care about) ❤️❤️

This new survey of 13,574 writers by @ALCS_UK adds to the mountain of evidence that creators strongly oppose the unlicensed training of gen AI models on their work. Some highlights: - 91% believe they should be asked permission for their works being used in training. Only 3% don't. - 92% want compensation for historic training on their works. - Only 8% of writers knew their work had been used as training data. This emphasizes the need for opt-in consent, as opposed to giving creators 'opt-out rights' - how can you opt out if you don't know it's happening? Read the full report: d16dqzv7ay57st.cloudfront.ne…
