What got me started building Paperweight was the Odido data breach. I hadn't been a customer for more than 8 years, but all my data, incl. government IDs was still in their systems. Years of online activity leave behind forgotten accounts, breached services and personal information spread across hundreds of companies. That gives attackers more material for phishing, scams, profiling, identity fraud and abuse. Paperweight doesn't just use your inbox to map your digital footprint. It finds the actual personal data you’ve shared with those companies and helps you remove what's no longer needed. What I'm building next are local tools that detect, mask and redact personal data before you share it with external systems. Expose less data in the first place and keep your digital footprint smaller over time. If you want to support my work, today is the final day of the @OctantApp privacy round. Every contribution directly helps build Paperweight and other open privacy tools and primitives. epoch.octant.app/rounds/0x57… Thanks 💙

New tools @intheopencc 🌱 Text redaction now has Masker Mini and Full (cc @nickvernij). Mini is the default. Full needs a larger download (~250 MB). Also added private image-to-text. Use it on its own, or paste/drop a screenshot into text redaction. intheopen.cc/tools/text-reda…

I have kept adding to the Tools directory. It now has 146 tools across 51 categories. The goal remains the same: help you choose tools that fit your threat model and everyday use. Featured tools: @Brave, @signalapp, @SimpleXChat, @RadarChat, @ProtonPrivacy, @Bitwarden, @Yubico, @PrivacyHQ, @GrapheneOS, @enteio, @notesnook, @fileverse, @goslnt, @Ubiquiti, @CapeCellular, @Zcash. Still curated by me. No affiliate links, sponsorships, or paid rankings. There are still gaps. If there is one tool or category you think deserves a closer look, tell me what you use and why. profincognito.me/tools/

Sharing a bit more on why I started @intheopencc 🌱 Because privacy is not a solo mission. It is the freedom to choose how we participate. That takes shared tools, public knowledge, and collective effort. We build in the open. We grow together. We connect people, projects, and ideas around privacy and digital rights. Trying to make privacy practical, understandable, and participatory. Looking forward doing that together!

What's crazy is... In July, the EU mandates every new car to have a camera watching you for safety. In Sept, AIVD warns us to be careful as your car may be watching you. It isn't about safety. The concern is over Chinese imports. My surveillance is better than yours.
❗️ The Dutch intelligence service AIVD is warning people not to hold confidential conversations in or near their cars, saying the microphones in many modern vehicles can technically be switched on remotely to eavesdrop. Some state actors can request car data from carmakers and other companies or hack in to get it themselves, the agency says. It advises skipping wireless charging and Bluetooth or Wi-Fi pairing, using a USB data blocker and not taking a car with an external camera to a sensitive location.

Google's Android developer ID requirement is now live. Apps from unregistered developers are blocked on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The rule goes global in 2027. To register, developers hand Google a government ID, their legal name, address, email, and phone number. They also pay $25. This applies even if the app never touches Google Play. Google says sideloading isn't going anywhere. F-Droid called that claim "clear, concise, and false." Users who want an unverified app now face ten steps, developer mode, several warning screens, and a 24 hour wait. Google is clearly putting the squeeze on Android's openness. reclaimthenet.org/google-and…

🚫 SOCIAL MEDIA BAN / RESTRICTION WATCHLIST - Oct 2026 🇨🇳 China - Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, WhatsApp, Telegram, Reddit and many other major foreign platforms remain blocked by the Great Firewall. 🇷🇺 Russia - Facebook, Instagram and X remain blocked. Telegram was blocked in March 2026; Bluesky was blocked in April. 🇮🇷 Iran - Instagram, WhatsApp, X, Facebook, Telegram and other major services remain blocked/restricted. Blocking can intensify during unrest. 🇲🇲 Myanmar - Facebook, Instagram and X remain blocked, alongside extensive internet censorship. 🇬🇦 Gabon - Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok and YouTube were blocked following the Feb 2026 political unrest; monitoring reports the block as ongoing. 🇺🇬 Uganda - Facebook and WhatsApp were blocked following the January 2026 election period, with social media restrictions continuing to be monitored. 🇮🇳 India - TikTok remains banned nationwide since 2020. Officials confirmed in 2025 that the ban had not been lifted. 🇦🇺 Australia - Under-16 social media ban is LIVE. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Snapchat, Reddit, Threads, Twitch and others are covered. Platforms face penalties up to A$109.2m. 🇫🇷 France - UPDATE: Parliament passed an under-15 social media ban, but France's Constitutional Council struck the ban down in August 2026. So don't call France's under-15 ban currently active. 🇬🇧 UK - UPDATE: government plans to ban under-16s from certain social media services from Spring 2027. Regulations are expected before the end of 2026. It is NOT yet in force. 🇳🇿 New Zealand - government introduced an Online Safety Bill to ban under-16s from high-risk social media. Includes age checks and potentially digital ID/facial age estimation. 🇪🇺 EU - UPDATE: European Commission proposed the EU KIDS Act on Sept 17, including no social media access for under-13s and an EU-wide minimum age of 15 for autonomous accounts. This is a PROPOSAL, not yet an EU-wide ban. 🇫🇷 France: Parliament passed the under-15 restriction, but the Constitutional Council struck down Article 1 because it considered the blanket restriction disproportionate and also raised the issue of age verification/privacy implications. 🇬🇧 UK: this has moved considerably beyond a proposal. The government says it will ban social media for under-16s, with regulations expected before year-end and implementation in Spring 2027. The government is explicitly considering a model similar to Australia's, with Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and X cited as examples. 🇪🇺 EU: the September 17 KIDS Act proposal is potentially the big one for your European audience. The Commission proposes under-13 prohibition + age 15 for autonomous accounts, with platforms bearing more responsibility for proving that their services are age-appropriate. It is not law yet. 🇦🇺 Australia: unlike the UK/EU proposals, Australia's system is already operational. As of the latest Australian regulator update, the law has been in effect since 10 December 2025, and eSafety says enforcement can seek penalties of up to A$109.2 million against companies that fail to take reasonable steps. Do social media bans make you a good parent?
