If you were born in the Polish People’s Republic, like me, you don’t romanticize the Soviet system… you remember it.
You remember shortages, ration cards, political repression, and a system where speaking freely could cost you everything. You remember what it meant to live under a regime imposed from Moscow, not chosen by the people.
For millions across Poland and Eastern Europe, the fall of the USSR wasn’t a “catastrophe”… it was liberation.
It meant the end of censorship.
It meant the ability to travel.
It meant the return of political freedom and national sovereignty.
Calling that one of the “greatest catastrophes” of the 20th century isn’t just wrong… it ignores the lived reality of those who suffered under it.
It’s easy to romanticize systems you’ve never had to live under. It’s a lot harder to explain that view to the people who actually did.
