i think AI is about to set off the biggest wave of historical discoveries ever and it's already started... > AI read the full text of a scroll buried by Mount Vesuvius 2,000 years ago, revealing a lost work of Stoic philosophy and a book by the philosopher Philodemus that nobody knew existed > AI deciphered another scroll from the same library and found Plato's exact burial spot, unknown for 2,000 years. the text even describes his final night, with Plato critiquing a flute player's rhythm from his deathbed > an AI handwriting model showed some Dead Sea Scrolls are 50 to 100 years older than scholars believed, putting the Book of Daniel within its author's lifetime. we could be looking at something close to an original > AI recovered a 250-line hymn to Babylon, one of the most copied texts of the ancient world, by matching 30 fragments scattered across museums worldwide. it had been lost for 1,000 years > AI found 303 new Nazca lines in Peru in six months, nearly doubling one of archaeology's most famous mysteries after a century of human searching had only turned up 430 > AI reconstructed the rules of a 2,000-year-old Roman board game from nothing but the carvings on a limestone slab, simulating thousands of games until it found the ruleset that fit everyone is excited about what AI will solve in the future i'm equally excited about what AI will solve from the past

Every man that tries to figure out the world entirely on his own ends up building a small, stupid god to replace the one he rejected. it never fails. he drops God, picks up science or stoicism or some guy on the internet who read enough books to pass for a prophet, and within six months he's talking about cold showers and circadian rhythms with the same exact tone a priest uses on sunday. the need to worship doesn't go anywhere just because you decided you're too smart for it. it just finds smaller things to attach to, and smaller gods make smaller people. nobody quits God. they trade down.

I'm not actually sure if I buy this line of thinking. Years ago, my mother used to spend a lot of time with Nepalese and Karen Thai refugees, who practiced arranged marriage. My mom asked them: "isn't that awful? Don't you want to marry for love?" They said that marrying for love seemed stupid to them, because the particular feeling of love you get at the beginning dissipates quickly. They said they suspected that's why Americans were always getting divorced; because they had expected an endless fairy tale. And they explained that in an arranged marriage, both parties just make the best of it at first, they may or may not be "compatible" or "in love," but that over time, the kind of commitment this type of marriage requires leads them to fall into a deeper, quieter, more enduring kind of love that sustains them across all of their life. So my mother used to tell me that who you marry shouldn't matter so much; it is about how you both approach the idea of marriage more than anything. And I think this is probably right. Refuse divorce at all costs; insist on deepening the connection, shape each other over time, and you will develop a symbiosis so deep it is unbreakable and un-changed by the vicissitudes of sentiment or "compatibility."
Marriage to a highly compatible partner is one of the strongest predictors of life satisfaction in adulthood. Stronger than career advancement. Stronger than higher income beyond a baseline. The infrastructure for getting that match right barely exists.

Just read an article arguing that the UK could, under existing law, dramatically reverse post-war demographic change, without passing a single new Act of Parliament. The claim rests on Britain’s denaturalisation powers, which allow citizenship to be revoked where an individual holds another nationality and removal is deemed “conducive to the public good.” According to the analysis, around 60% of naturalised non-British citizens could theoretically fall within this framework, with further population reductions arising from family reunification rules, dependent status, and visa cancellations. The author concludes that, taken together, these mechanisms could restore Britain to roughly 92% White/Western demographics using laws already on the books.

Self driving cars will obviously come to dominate the market and when that happens people will look back at automobiles the same way we look at two-martini lunches or smoking in restaurants or free range children, which is to say that to their eyes it will seem as though we were crazy, but only because they will never have tasted anything like the freedom an ordinary person enjoyed in, say, 1970.

I do believe that in 50 years we will look back with disdain on the entire concept of car ownership. Hard to imagine, but I do believe it is going to happen.

One thing Helen misses in this otherwise excellent analysis is the role played by prestige. Cancel culture was enabled by the unique circumstance of women weaponizing the prestige of freshly feminized legacy institutions. So long as those institutions retained their prestige, what the people who ran them said really mattered. Unfortunately for the ladies (but luckily for civilization), this is self-limiting, because prestige is fundamentally an emergent property of masculine competence hierarchies. We see this demonstrated whenever a profession becomes coded as women's work: its prestige immediately crashes. Feminists have complained about this for years, though of course they misunderstand the mechanism (prestige is a component of male sexual attractiveness, but not of female, and this is biologically hard-wired). This prestige collapse is now affecting essentially every coopted, feminized institution - universities, news media, publishing houses, movie studios, large corporations, various government agencies, hospitals, courts, churches, all of them wield far less cultural power than they did even a few years ago. The only people who really care what these legacy institutions say are the women who took them over. To everyone else, the angry sounds they make are nothing more than background noise. This is probably the main reason for the vibe shift. Once the prestige of feminized institutions declined below a certain threshold, their ability to enforce social consensus began to evaporate. It's also probably no accident that the Trump administration seems to care a lot more about what the anons of the Online Right say than it does about the opinion of the universities or the news media. All the intelligent young men got pushed out of the institutions, and those ionized particles of free male energy then began to self-assemble online into an ad hoc competence hierarchy where prestige is measured by clout rather than professional degrees, job titles, or institutional affiliations. The anon swarm is entirely informal, meaning that its outcomes are not amenable to antidiscrimination legislation or to procedural manipulation; you can screw with the algo all you want but you can't actually force people to care what women say just because they're women (thereby placing women into the position of openly trading in thirst, which gets them attention but certainly doesn't mean that anyone has to pretend to take them seriously). All that's happened so far is that people's attention has been redirected away from crazy woke females and towards the influencers of the online right. The fever has broken but society is a long way from recovered. The institutions are still under the control of crazy woke females, and this is extremely bad, especially because they are - for biological reasons related to childlessness - only going to get crazier as time goes on. Fortunately no one really cares what they say anymore, so as they throw tantrums as the institutions are reclaimed over the next decade or so, their protests won't register as anything but irrelevant toddler noise.

There is a lot of retardation on this platform. If you have a wife, kids and meaningful work, you’re ahead of 99% of the based commentariat. Life is not easy. Things can go wrong. That’s the way it is. But you’re meant to give yourself to things greater than your moment to moment desires. “I’m old! I’m norwooding! My wife gained 20 pounds since we got married! My kids demand my time and attention!” Oh no, you should have started a substonk and gained more followers! Then you would be cool and smart like me! Fellas…please don’t fall for these ridiculous delusions. You want to improve the world? Have a strong family, raise children that are greater and better than yourself. It’s the most impactful thing 99% of us can reasonably acheive, and it echos for generations.

One thing I don't agree with in this progressive modern world: we tend to over-value intelligence, detached from moral and ethics. We are so keen to celebrate intelligence and cleverness that we forget to put it in perspective or to situate it in a wider framework. And to extend this thought, we have the same problem with all things that we consider good. I am by no means alone in this concern. We see it easily whenever some celebrity is discovered to be using their intellect for obviously bad things, or when a celebrity impersonating an intelligent person is found to be doing some bad or negative or highly immoral. G.K. Chesterton wrote about this in the book Heretics (which might be the best book of his to start with), in 1905:
