What does it take for a farmers' cooperative to succeed?
In Koboko District, Uganda, 540 smallholder farmers are increasing productivity, creating new income opportunities, and building a stronger future for their cooperative. Through a shared investment model supported by ForAfrika, and the World Food Programme, the Malikuru Multipurpose Farmers Cooperative acquired a tractor that has already helped farmers cultivate 343 acres while creating new revenue streams for the cooperative and local jobs for community members.
"We were tired of using rudimentary ways to plough our land," says Yosa David, the cooperative's chairperson.
Members now hire the tractor, while a new cassava chipper has added another source of income.
This is what co-investment looks like at community level. Read the full story: forafrika.org/economic-empow…

In Reframe Voices Issue 9, author Emelda Napeyo reflects on the reality facing communities across South Sudan as funding shrinks while flooding, conflict, and displacement persist.
Shrinking resources are only part of the issue. The bigger problem? Who gets to decide how those resources are used.
Grassroots and refugee-led organisations—the ones who live in these communities and understand their needs best—are still treated as mere implementers rather than equal partners in shaping solutions.

NURTURE NOW, EARLY CHILDHOOD MATTERS
Investing in Early Learning Opportunities for Children in Refugee Settlements
Every child deserves a strong beginning. Yet, for many children growing up in refugee settlements, that beginning is increasingly threatened by poverty, limited resources, closure of community ECD centres, inadequate learning materials and insufficient support for caregivers and teachers. When an ECD centre closes, it is not simply a classroom that disappears—it is a safe space, a learning opportunity and a foundation for a child's future that is lost.
This is why HARD Uganda, in partnership with the Refugee Led Organization Network (RELON Uganda), is implementing the one-year SPARK ECD Project, funded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation through RELON Uganda. SPARK—Supporting Play, Awareness and Resilience of Kids through Early Childhood Development—is working to strengthen early learning opportunities for children aged 0–6 years while empowering parents, caregivers, teachers and communities to build sustainable solutions.
In Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement, approximately 50 community-based ECD centres have been identified, with around 15 centres closed and approximately 35 continuing to operate under significant challenges. Many children are therefore at risk of missing the critical early years of learning and development.
The upcoming Radio Talkshow on Pacis 90.9 FM, Arua, from 7:00–8:00 PM provides an important platform to bring this issue to the public. We will discuss why ECD matters, the challenges facing community ECD centres, the role of parents and communities, and the responsibility of government, OPM, UNHCR, district authorities and development partners in ensuring sustainable investment in early childhood.
This is more than a radio discussion. It is a conversation about the future of our children. It is an opportunity to challenge the misconception that ECD is a luxury, amplify the voices of affected communities and call for practical action to revitalise closed centres, support teachers and caregivers, provide learning materials and integrate ECD into refugee response and local development planning.
Join us. Listen. Speak. Advocate. Act.
Because a child does not have to wait until primary school to begin learning. Learning begins from birth.
> If we want children to become confident learners tomorrow, we must nurture them today.
NURTURE NOW. EARLY CHILDHOOD MATTERS.

🌱 Every Child Deserves a Strong Start
Learning doesn't begin in the classroom, It starts at home. When caregivers actively support early learning through play, storytelling, conversation, and encouragement, children develop confidence, curiosity, and the skills they need to thrive.
At #HARD Uganda, we believe empowering caregivers is key to unlocking every child's potential. Together, let's create safe, nurturing environments where every child can learn, grow, and succeed.

🌱 Growing Food, Building Resilience
Through the Green Harvests and Resilient Homes Project, funded by the IKEA Foundation through COHERE, HARD Uganda is empowering refugee and host communities with climate-smart agriculture.
At one of our three demonstration sites in Rhino Camp Extension, Omugo Refugee Settlement, 60 members are preparing land to transplant vegetable seedlings raised in the nursery. The project supports refugee households no longer receiving food assistance from the World Food Programme (WFP), helping them improve food security, nutrition, and household incomes through sustainable vegetable production.
HARD Uganda remains committed to equipping communities with practical skills and opportunities that promote self-reliance, resilience, and sustainable development.
