The Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme congratulates Belgian maritime and clean-energy developer CMB.TECH on the successful deployment of Mineral Europa, the worldโs first ammonia-powered dry bulk vessel, which embarked on its maiden voyage from China to Australia on 9 October 2026. With a carrying capacity of 210,000 deadweight tonnes, the vessel represents a significant breakthrough in efforts to decarbonise global shipping.
According to CMB.TECHโs official announcement, 21 additional ammonia-powered vessels are scheduled to join its fleet by 2029. This milestone demonstrates the growing commercial application of green ammonia as an alternative marine fuel and signals an emerging international market for green fuels that Namibia is positioning itself to supply.
For Namibia, this achievement is particularly significant because CMB.TECH is already investing in green hydrogen and ammonia developments in Walvis Bay, Erongo Region. Through its Namibian operations, the company is advancing green hydrogen production, refuelling infrastructure and a proposed ammonia storage and bunkering terminal at the Port of Walvis Bay, with a planned storage capacity of 55,000 tonnes.
The company is also collaborating with TransNamib on a hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel locomotive, planned for a six-month pilot involving approximately 50 return journeys between Walvis Bay and Windhoek. These initiatives demonstrate how technologies being commercialised internationally can be introduced into Namibiaโs transport and logistics sectors, creating opportunities for local skills development, industrial investment and participation in emerging clean-energy value chains.
The Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme welcomes this milestone as further evidence that green industrialisation is moving beyond ambition towards practical commercial applications. As international demand for cleaner maritime fuels grows, Namibia has an opportunity to leverage its renewable energy resources, strategic Atlantic coastline and port infrastructure to become a competitive producer, supplier and bunkering hub for green hydrogen and ammonia.
The Programme looks forward to CMB.TECH translating its international technological achievements into successful projects in Walvis Bay and across the Erongo Region, contributing to Namibiaโs ambition of building a diversified, industrialised economy that creates employment, develops local expertise and adds value to its renewable energy resources.
At the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, placed youth development and climate justice at the centre of Namibiaโs development agenda.
The President highlighted Namibiaโs efforts to prepare young people to participate meaningfully in emerging industries, including oil and gas, renewable energy and green hydrogen. Building the skills and capabilities of young Namibians is critical to ensuring that the countryโs natural resources and emerging industries translate into employment, entrepreneurship and long-term economic opportunities. To date, Namibia has awarded close to 270 scholarships in fields related to renewable energy and green technologies.
On climate change, President Nandi-Ndaitwah underscored the imbalance faced by Namibia and other developing countries: despite contributing a very small share of global greenhouse-gas emissions, they remain highly exposed to droughts, rising temperatures and increasing pressure on agriculture and water resources. She called for greater responsibility and sustainable climate financing to support vulnerable countries in responding to these impacts and advancing SDG 13.

Namibia has been ranked second among the worldโs fastest-growing renewable energy markets, driven largely by the rapid expansion of solar power, according to an analysis by the World Resources Institute (WRI).
The analysis, updated in August 2026, places Namibia alongside Uruguay, the Netherlands and Denmark among countries that have come closest to achieving the pace of solar and wind growth required globally.
The assessment measures the rate at which countries have increased the share of solar and wind in their electricity generation rather than their total installed renewable energy capacity.
According to WRI, Uruguay, Namibia, the Netherlands and Denmark have achieved about three-quarters of the annual global growth rate required between 2025 and 2030. Lithuania, Chile and Jordan were also highlighted for rapidly expanding solar and wind generation.
