Namibia imports 343MW of solar panels as embedded generation expands Namibia imported about 343 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar panels between 2023 and 2026, with an estimated 172MWp connected to electricity distribution networks as embedded generation continues to expand across the country. Sustainable Energy Africa Senior Project Coordinator Zibusiso Ndlovu said the rapid growth in distributed solar generation has outpaced the ability of utilities and regulators to track installations and assess their impact on electricity networks. “In Namibia from 2023 to 2026 we imported about 343 megawatts peak of solar panels into the country. And roughly half of that sits actually in distribution. So that is about 172 megawatts that sits in distribution,” Ndlovu said. The figures were presented with reference to an August 2026 report by energy think tank Ember, which estimated that Africa imported about 17 gigawatts peak (GWp) of solar panels this year, mostly from China, with approximately 75% deployed within distribution networks. miningandenergy.com.na/namib… #namibia #energy #suustainableenergy #solarpanels @MME_Nam @CoMinesNamibia @ecbnam @REIAoN

Namibia ranks first globally for average practical solar photovoltaic (PV) power potential, giving the country a major renewable energy advantage that government wants to leverage to develop green hydrogen, mineral refining and manufacturing industries. Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme Interim Head Joseph Mukendwa said the country's solar and wind resources could provide the low-carbon electricity required to shift Namibia from exporting raw materials towards producing higher-value industrial products. Speaking at the African Green Industries Summit 2026 in Swakopmund, Mukendwa said the World Bank's Global Photovoltaic Power Potential by Country assessment ranks Namibia first globally for average practical PV power potential. “The World Bank has essentially indicated that Namibia is number one in the world for practical PV power potential. The second superpower is wind,” Mukendwa said. thebrief.com.na/2026/09/nami… #namibia #energy #solarpv #renewableenergy #manufacturing @NIPDB @REIAoN @nampowernamibia @gh2namibia @ecbnam

WATCH: Senior Project Coordinator for Sustainable Energy Africa, Zibusiso Ndlovu, talked to Eagle Media House about the ins and outs of the newly launched Embedded Generation Online Application Platform. Namibia, South Africa, and Eswatini are the only African countries with such a platform. Ndlovu highlighted how in South Africa, the platform is used by over 56 electricity distributors. “South Africa had a large solar boom, largely driven by load shedding. We have installed over 7 gigawatts of embedded generation solar in the South African grid. A lot of that is facilitated through this kind of platform,” Ndlovu concluded. @ecbnam @SEA_UrbanEnergy @nampowernamibia

Namibian households seeking to install grid-connected rooftop solar systems could have their applications processed within 30 days under a new Electricity Control Board (ECB) platform aimed at simplifying embedded generation approvals. The online system allows households and other electricity consumers to submit embedded generation applications digitally, while electricity distributors will assess whether proposed installations can safely be connected to their networks. The ECB is targeting a 30-day turnaround for systems below one megawatt, a category that would include typical residential rooftop solar installations. “We commit to reviewing platform performance quarterly and publishing processing times. Our target is a 30-day turnaround for systems under one megawatt,” ECB Chief Executive Officer Robert Kahimise said. The platform provides a standardised process as more households invest in solar generation to produce some of their own electricity. Embedded generation refers to electricity generated at or close to where it is consumed, including rooftop solar systems installed at homes, businesses, farms and institutions. thebrief.com.na/2026/09/ecb-… #namibia #solarsystems #onlinesystems #electricity @ecbnam @EUinNamibia @BMZ_Bund

Namibia moves to cut approval uncertainty for embedded energy projects Namibia is moving to reduce regulatory uncertainty for embedded generation projects by introducing standardised online applications and targeting a 30-day turnaround for systems below one megawatt. The Electricity Control Board (ECB) has launched a national embedded generation platform that will allow renewable-energy developers, businesses, households and institutions to submit applications digitally while enabling electricity distributors to assess proposed grid connections online. The move is aimed at creating a more predictable approval environment as investment in distributed renewable generation, particularly solar photovoltaic systems, expands across Namibia. ECB Chief Executive Officer Robert Kahimise said the electricity sector is undergoing a fundamental transition as consumers increasingly invest in their own generation capacity. miningandenergy.com.na/namib… #namibia #energy #renewableenergy #electricity #investment @MME_Nam @CoMinesNamibia @ecbnam @EUinNamibia @REIAoN @giz_gmbh

Namibia Launches Distribution Generation Online Platform The Electricity Control Board (@ecbnam), in collaboration with GET.transform officially launched an Embedded Generation Online Application Platform intended to advance the Electricity Supply Industry of Namibia. “This is an exciting development that brings mew opportunities for Namibia. Digitalisation can make regulating the sector more transparent. The aim is not to simply put applications online. It is to make it easier, faster, and more predictable to connect distributed generation while maintaining grid security and protecting consumers,” Head of the EU Delegation to Namibia, Ana-Beatriz Martins stated. @EUinNamibia The website is now live at netmetering.org.na
