The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), in partnership with Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited (HEOSL) and Global Ocean Engineers Nigeria Limited, yesterday held the official kick-off ceremony of the Human Capacity Development (HCD) Training Programme under the Field Readiness Training Initiative in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The programme focuses on Subsea Engineering and is designed to develop specialised technical skills among 48 young Nigerians. The Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, FNSE, was represented by Alexis Emelle, General Manager, Capacity Building Division, NCDMB, who delivered the keynote address. He emphasised that Subsea Engineering requires precision, discipline and accountability, noting that the practical experience gained during the programme would be essential for the safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally responsible operation of modern oil and gas facilities. He noted that the ultimate objective extended beyond obtaining certificates or completing a curriculum. Rather, the programme was expected to produce competent professionals capable of making meaningful contributions to the oil and gas industry and justifying the confidence placed in them. He also reaffirmed NCDMB’s mandate to build Nigerian capacity and expand indigenous participation in the oil and gas sector, describing the initiative as a reflection of the shared commitment between the Board and HEOSL to developing the skilled workforce required to sustain the industry’s future. The Executive Secretary expressed appreciation to HEOSL for its continued partnership and investment in human capital development and wished the trainees a productive and rewarding training experience. The ceremony marked an important step towards strengthening indigenous technical capacity, expanding opportunities for young Nigerians and developing a skilled workforce capable of supporting the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, particularly in the specialised field of Subsea Engineering.

Energy security begins with sustained investment across all energy sources, supported by robust infrastructure, strategic partnerships, and investor-friendly policies that guarantee reliable, affordable, and resilient global energy supplies. Amid mounting geopolitical tensions and growing pressures on global energy supplies, the world is increasingly looking to Nigeria, given our vast energy reserves, expansive domestic market, and strategic position along reliable and accessible trade routes. As co-host of the #IEF17 Ministerial, alongside Italy’s Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Nigeria is firmly in the global energy spotlight, with growing demand for our crude oil and other energy resources. We will continue to leverage Nigeria’s comparative advantages, strengthen partnerships, and create an enabling environment for investments that deliver lasting benefits to Nigerians and the global energy market. On the balance of our stories. Words are powerful. Narrative is everything. I once asked a close friend living in Nigeria if he truly believed that a hundred churches are being burned down every month in Nigeria. He looked me dead in the eye and said, YES. He was not the only one. By my calculation, according to the stories, 300,000 churches had been burned down in the North alone. How many churches are there in all of Nigeria? That was terrifying, and I could almost understand why that lunatic buffoon in the White House would go burn down a parking lot in Sokoto with expired bombs. Something needed to be done. And of Tinubu wouldn't do it, Trump would save us. But then you come to Nigeria, stay a few months, and no one mentions burning churches and slaughtered Christians, you ask about them and Christians look at you askance, you who have been away too long. You hold their gaze long enough and they mumble something about killings in the north. And return to picking at their grilled croaker fish. And you wonder. Out in the West, enterprising Nigerians and their racist white leaders are making a killing creating spurious PowerPoints and NGOs, extracting millions from white racist ultra-right groups with deep pockets. In our stories, in our literature, in our politics, many have found ways to profit from our national trauma and anxieties. It has come at a cost. Two months I have been here, my safety has been on my mind, always. I have been everywhere, people generally leave you alone. People back in the US marvel when you tell them you walk freely in Nigeria, and then they pray for you to return home safe. It was never always like this. To be clear, there are many reasons why one has to be careful here. Nigeria is not child friendly, not elder-friendly. You are more likely to die from ingesting fake products, getting sick, or having an accident on the broken roads than being kidnapped. Just be careful. If you get sick or hurt, even their best hospitals will struggle to comfort you in the way you are used to. And yes, there are areas in the north where Christians are targeted. The government should work hard at countering the misinformation out there through effective mass communication and through actually working hard to protect citizens from kidnappers and terrorists. And one church burnt, one Christian slaughtered is one too many. But those of you lying for money, may your NGOs never see the light of day. I have enjoyed being in Nigeria. It has also been tough. Nigeria is a hard space. But once you figure out the method to her lunacy it's a fun space, more fun than America. I love it here. I can't wait to get back to America. Una dey try sha, una dey try! #MaximumRespectNigeria

Every September we mark Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. This year it’s more personal for me. More than 330,000 American men this year will hear the words we did last spring when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. By the time we found it, it had already spread to my bones. When prostate cancer is caught early, the five-year survival is close to 100%. So have the conversation with your doctor. Don’t put it off. If you're at average risk, that conversation should start around 50, and the guidelines now say screening every 2 to 4 years. If you're a Black man, start it at 45 or earlier. You are nearly 70% more likely to get this disease and 2 to 4 times more likely to die from it. Which is an outrage in the richest country in the world. If your father or your brother had prostate cancer, start the conversation at 45, and even earlier if more than one of them did. I am deeply grateful to the doctors, nurses and other medical professionals who helped to control my cancer and who continue to take such good care of me. Their skill, dedication, and compassion mean so much. The radiation treatment from last fall worked as intended, and I continue to do the things I care about, like finishing my memoir. Thank you to everyone who has reached out and continues to keep me and my family in your prayers. We appreciate every single one of you. It’s my hope and prayer that by sharing our experience and being part of this important conversation, we can help save lives. Talk to your doctors. Ask the hard questions. Do it for yourself, and do it for the people who love you. And no matter what, keep the faith. God bless you.
