🚨 Leadership News: Fair and Just Prosecution is thrilled to announce civil rights champion and former Florida State Attorney Aramis Ayala as our new Executive Director! 🧵
The playbook is familiar: Stoke fear. Divide communities. Then offer harsher punishment as the solution.
But policies should be judged by whether they actually make communities safer, not by how tough they sound.

A prosecutor should want to win at trial, but never more than they want to get it right.
The duty to seek justice starts long before trial. It requires objectively evaluating evidence, considering every angle, and pursuing the truth, not simply a conviction.
An arrest isn't proof of guilt. And dropping a case isn't automatically a failure of justice.
Sometimes evidence falls short. Sometimes prosecutors fall short. Sometimes the law itself falls short.
Accountability requires understanding the difference.
Political pressure should never determine prosecutorial decisions.
Prosecutors have a duty to exercise independent judgment & seek justice, even when doing so comes at a personal or professional cost. Prosecutorial independence means putting that duty before political interests.

Just because prosecutors CAN do something doesn't mean they SHOULD. Prosecutorial discretion requires judgment grounded in fairness, the law, and a duty to seek justice. How that discretion is exercised matters for public safety and community trust. #DefiningJustice #PublicSafety
Disagreement between police and prosecutors isn’t dysfunction. It’s the result of different roles, responsibilities, and expertise.
The goal isn’t agreement. It’s justice. And the foundation of a strong partnership is respect.

Prosecutors have a duty to seek justice, not simply affirm decisions made by law enforcement.
FJP ED Donell explains how the distinct roles of police and prosecutors shape their responsibilities, and why prosecutors must make their own decisions in the pursuit of justice.
Justice isn't just about getting the right outcome. How we get there matters.
Protecting constitutional rights and ensuring a fair process are essential to public trust and community safety.
FJP Executive Director Aramis N. Donell explains why.

1/ Public safety depends on trust. When people fear immigration enforcement in places they turn to for worship, support & essential services, that trust erodes.
FJP and @PoliceForReform filed an amicus brief urging the First Circuit to uphold protections for sensitive locations.
2/ Removing these protections can discourage people from accessing trusted community institutions and spread fear beyond those directly at risk, including to people who are not lawfully subject to immigration enforcement.
3/ That erosion of trust can make victims and witnesses less willing to report crimes or cooperate with local law enforcement, making it harder to keep communities safe.

Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing (PIR) is a model for how we can revisit past decisions in the best interest of justice, public safety, and reuniting families.
In states with PIR, District Attorneys have utilized the tool to resentence and release people whose incarceration is no longer in the interest of justice. Results show that PIR works and should be expanded.

MYTH: Only people with felony convictions experience lasting negative consequences.
REALITY: Even arrest and non-conviction records, where no guilt was ever established, are associated with long-term economic losses.
