BIG & BREAKING: After a long, difficult wait, automatic criminal record sealing begins TODAY in VA!!! This requires no work by the person whose record is being sealed. Is my record getting auto sealed? Head to the Justice Forward Foundation for details: justiceforwardvafoundation.o…

ALT Automatic sealing requires no work by the person whose record is being sealed. When automatic sealing begins, the Virginia State Police will send lists of eligible records to the courts, who will seal these records from public view. There are only a few types of records that will be sealed automatically, and all of them are misdemeanor convictions: Misdemeanor larceny, § 18.2-96, or concealment, § 18.2-103 Three types of trespass: § 18.2-119, § 18.2-120 or § 18.2-134 Misdemeanor possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, § 18.2-248.1 Disorderly conduct, § 18.2-415

MYTH: Only people with felony convictions experience lasting negative consequences.
REALITY: Even arrest and non-conviction records, where no guilt was ever established, are associated with long-term economic losses.
Over 14 prime working years, the estimated earnings penalty adds up to approximately $72,000. By helping fill an important gap in what we know about arrest and non-conviction records, this research provides further evidence of the need for Clean Slate policies that expand access-
-to record sealing and reduce barriers to economic opportunity.

Every person who shows up for Clean Slate is vital to driving these policies forward. And over the years, we’ve had some community members whose dedication have gone above and beyond. We had the chance to recognize a few of those people at our Lived Experience Leadership Summit:
The findings in our report underscore the need to reduce unnecessary record-related barriers through policies like Clean Slate’s automated record sealing. Read The Economic Losses from Arrest and Conviction Records to explore the full findings at thecollectivecost.org #ELACR26
Record-related economic losses are widespread, but the burden is not evenly shared. Our latest research finds that records operate within a labor market already shaped by racial and sex-based inequities.
Female respondents with conviction records earned approximately 50 to 53 cents for every dollar earned by male respondents with the same record type.
Expanding access to record sealing through #CleanSlate can reduce barriers to economic opportunity, helping more eligible people access a fair chance to work and build economic stability. Learn more at thecollectivecost.org.
