‘Police need more tools than handcuffs’
“The recently announced proposal to create a Department of Neighborhood Safety is an important part of this conversation, but communities in Baltimore and across Maryland have been asking a related question for years: When police encounter someone who has committed a low-level, nonviolent offense, is arrest always the best way to make the community safer, or should officers have other options?”

‘Methadone saves lives. Why does the system make it hard to get?’
“Redmond’s Liquid Handcuffs offers a rare window on the absurdity of many of the methadone restrictions. As she puts it, “In any other field of medicine, deliberately denying someone their life-saving medication as a punishment would be grounds for a lawsuit, disciplinary action, or license suspension.””

This is an overlooked and under-reported issue. U.S. soldiers have been active in Ecuador for a month and very few people know about it. This piece sheds light on the situation:

Something to truly consider. Limiting and banning one provision can lead to upticks in potentially more harmful practices.
"A 2025 study of Canadian sales data found that provincial e-cigarette flavor restrictions led to a nearly 10 percent increase in cigarette sales. A study of U.S. sales found that flavor restrictions led to about 11 to 15 more cigarettes sold for every e-cigarette pod no longer sold." reason.org/commentary/flavor… via @ReasonFdn

Is there a different way to treat public safety? Unarmed 911 teams, or community responders, are gaining momentum across the U.S.

LEAP was founded in 2002 by members of the security forces who began to question the ban from their work applying drug laws and today also brings together prosecutors, judges and other criminal system professionals who promote reforms in drug policy and criminal justice.
"The war on drugs has changed what police work was supposed to be," Woods said in his response to MATE. According to his analysis, that war pitted the police against the communities as criminal organisations learned to adapt to each new form of persecution. "This has generated immeasurable corruption and is destroying the police from within," he warns.”
