One of the keys to optimizing some of the Dodgers’ top arms? It could be a 24-year-old who was pitching in college two years ago.
Here’s Rob Hill’s improbable path to Dodger pitching coordinator.

Pitch design wizard @ericjagers has been using DrivelineEDGE to overlay ball visualizations on top of high-speed footage as a means of fixing seam orientation. This has trimmed the learning curve tremendously in terms of picking up spin axis on video.

There is a large difference between [wanting to know something] and [wanting to learn something]
There are a lot of new things to learn in the baseball/coaching space.
Many are interested and want to know this stuff, which is great..but don't want to learn it.

With @Brewers MiLBer @PitchMeister this off-season we wanted to add a laterally breaking SL to compliment his 95+ FB and CT w/o changing his approach. To do this we needed a pitch that he could try and throw 100 but still create the mvmnt we wanted. Video details this process.

A theme that keeps coming up this year is the importance of spin axis + spin rate, and how they relate to movement
Sonny Gray: theathletic.com/850202/2019/…
Dillon Maples: theathletic.com/852141/2019/…
We explained the importance of the two in a recent blog: drivelinebaseball.com/2019/0…

Side-by-side of plyoballs being thrown off the mound (synced to foot plant)
Gray = 100g
Yellow = 150g
White = 5oz (baseball)
Red = 225g
Blue = 450g
Green = 1000g
Green (and blue a little bit) obviously moving slower than the other throws

Visual to help showoff @DanAlt3225 pitch design changes this off-season w/slider. Replicated pitch axis and mov profiles to show that the slight shift in axis had big payoffs; from finding barrels ➡️ missing barrels.
Red path: old
Green path: new 🔥
