Low key it’s more interesting & underrated that scouting is what’s mentioned.
Way under discussed the tension that still can exist between scouts, coaches & analyst and who gets credit or blame for performance.
Would go as far to say that is the tension between old/new school.
We’ve spent years talking about the Dodgers payroll, but are we asking the WRONG question?
Milwaukee, Tampa Bay, Cleveland… year after year, these organizations find ways to compete without spending like the giants.
At what point do big-market teams stop obsessing over analytics and start POACHING the scouts from these organizations?
Maybe the biggest competitive advantage in baseball isn’t payroll. It’s knowing how to IDENTIFY TALENT that can compete when the lights are the brightest?..

The best baseball coaching meme of all time? I think so.
Thanks @OC____
Idk man, sometimes things are that clear and I would say that experimenting with things is a positive.
Would be easier to just make the ball 6 oz instead of 5.
You can make the bases bigger, tell the defense where to play, control the pick off attempts, but none of that can help a human react and handle the pitching stuff that we’re seeing in today’s game. At some point, we’ll have to move the mound back. #1890
Depends if they’re winning or losing 🙃
Hitters have always adjusted. Just a nature of the sport.
The hitters ‘offense’ is at mercy of what pitch the defense (pitchers) throws and where they stand.
Changing defense runs makes it easier for hitters to get hits where they did in the past, what fans seem to ask for.

Why is the answer always to limit the defense and not make the hitters adjust? What’s next put a dot where every fielder has to stand on, or only allow 2 outfielders?
This is good/needed. If you want to increase balls in play it’s more straightforward to have more specificity narrow starting positions.
Wouldn’t be surprised if MIF is next.
MLB's Arizona Fall League is experimenting with rules that regulate the positioning of outfielders in an effort to increase the number of balls in the gap.
Outfielders under these rules are playing closer to the lines than normal, creating much bigger swaths of grass in the alleyways in left-center and right-center field.
FanGraphs was first to report the news.
BA's Josh Norris and J.J. Cooper have more:

All of these would be good.
Trading regular season for more playoff games would be a solid trade.
MLB has proposed returning to a 154-game Regular Season, best-of-seven Division Series, and opponent selection in the Wild Card and Division Series
Starting in 2029, shortening the season to a 154-game schedule would create a standard weekly off day benefiting player health, and it would allow the addition of up to 8 more Postseason games by moving to a best-of-seven Division Series format
Beginning in 2027, higher-seeded clubs in the Wild Card and Division Series would select their opponents
Great clip, generally too much focus on peak fastball velo when:
- velocity floor is higher
- faster & better offspeed
- defensive positioning improved
- much higher quality of defenders
"The guy that used to hit .300, I'm sorry to tell you, is going to hit .240, .250 today. It just is what it is."
@JoeyVotto breaks down why the league does not have more players like Luis Arraez and explains how baseball's evolution has led to that trend.
Always found it assuming that the non-MLB examples are college coaches and then jumps straight to MLB GM
Guess we’ll see but don’t think they’d move Julio, Cal, Naylor. Just need career avg seasons.
Healthy Donavan & Emerson. Resign Randy?
Tougher since it’s more guys not performing to projections/expectations.

Pete Crow-Armstrong has faced 28 teams and 286 pitchers in 22 stadiums so far this season, which isn't over yet
Joe DiMaggio faced 7 teams and 321 pitchers in 9 stadiums in his entire (regular season) career, which spanned 13 seasons between 1936-1951.
It's a different sport.
I think it’s a pretty good insight to the difference between old & new school.
Mainly, people interpret it as ‘everything you hit should be pulled in the air’ but that’s not how it should be.

Is Pull-Air the new "Driveline only does bat speed" oversimplification?
This is from a Yahoo article in February:
