Arshad Nadeem's current struggles or decline in form do not erase a single thing that he has already achieved. Olympic champion. Commonwealth Games champion. Asian Champion, and World Championships silver medallist. And he did it in athletics, in a sport Pakistan has neglected for decades, without anything remotely resembling the system, infrastructure, money or attention that cricket has enjoyed in this country. So when people try to belittle Arshad's achievements by casually comparing them with a Cricket World Cup triumph, they miss the entire point. Cricket was already Pakistan's biggest sport, backed by an established structure, massive public interest and generations of investment. Arshad emerged from the ashes and reached the absolute summit of one of the most globally competitive disciplines on the planet. An Olympic gold medal in athletics is not some ordinary sporting achievement. You compete against the world, representing yourself in the arena, and there is nowhere to hide behind ten teammates. One throw, one athlete, and Arshad delivered when it mattered most. There is a reason athletics has historically been described as the "mother of all sports.' You can criticise Arshad's recent performances. You can question his form, preparation and what has gone wrong since his Olympic triumph. That is completely fair. But using a difficult phase to diminish what he has already accomplished is sporting illiteracy of the highest order. Form is temporary. An Olympic gold medal is forever. And if someone still cannot comprehend the magnitude of a Pakistani athlete becoming Olympic champion in athletics despite coming through a chronically neglected sporting system, perhaps the problem is not Arshad Nadeem. It is their understanding of sport.
