The Hamilton School is pleased to announce the publication of Stuart Serenissima: Venice and England in the Seventeenth Century, a new volume of essays edited by @elo_dav, Assistant Professor in Humanities at the Hamilton School, and Alana Mailes, a historical musicologist at Williams College. Published by Liverpool University Press, the book explores the distinctive relationship between Stuart England and the Republic of Venice. Featuring contributions from leading scholars across diverse fields (cultural history, economic history, musicology, political theory, art history and literary studies), Stuart Serenissima offers a new account of a consequential moment of political, cultural and religious exchange that shaped the early modern Mediterranean and beyond. liverpooluniversitypress.co.…

Went to see the lovely Churchill exhibition at The Wallace Collection this afternoon. Very well worth a visit. (And the Court Yard restaurant is a delight.)
A piece for @EngelsbergIdeas on my old favourite Catherine of Siena - underrated political thinker and icon of Renaissance art.

One of the most fascinating history books which portrays from an interesting angle the Battle of Lepanto and the role of the Albanian aristocratic family Bruni-Bruti in the service of Papacy, Spain, Venice, Britain and Ottoman Empire. So well written that it feels like fiction.
What an excellent week for new books! Today’s congratulations to my brilliant former colleague @tmbejan. Excited to read.

Publication Day! "The Spirit of the British Constitution: Parliamentary Reform from the Civil War to the Great Reform Act" (@PrincetonUPress) has now been released in the US. The idea for the book started with an article I drafted on the Tories and the Septennial Act in 2016 (published in HPT in 2019), so one could say that it has been a decade in the making. But I completed this book as a proud faculty member of @ufhamilton since 2023. I would like to thank all my friends and colleagues at Hamilton, and around the world. press.princeton.edu/books/ha…

I wrote a feature article in @HistoryToday based on my book, Inventing Immortality 👇
Is the soul immortal, or does it die with the body? At the turn of the 18th century, amateur theologians like Henry Layton began to speculate, much to experts’ chagrin.
