The Republic begins with four words: katebēn chthes eis Peiraia. We might say ‘Yesterday I went down to the Piraeus.’ Ancient sources report that a tablet was found among Plato’s effects on which these words had been written out in several different orders.
Plato’s final choice puts katebēn (‘I went down’) first.
Why?
The reissue of Hamilton and Cairns’ celebrated edition of Plato’s dialogues shows how every translation bears the marks of its era and of its translator’s taste.

On John Henry Newman's feast day recall his account of a university: where "the intellect may safely range and speculate, sure to find its equal in some antagonist activity, and its judge in the tribunal of truth. It is a place where inquiry is pushed forward, and discoveries verified and perfected, and rashness rendered innocuous, and error exposed, by the collision of mind with mind, and knowledge with knowledge." New from me and @bhatia_ud in the @apsrjournal : a limited and conditional defense of machine politics (aka clientelism, patronage, vote-buying) in service of collective countervailing power.
The politics of hollowed-out parties twiddling their thumbs on social media while the world burns has failed us. @bhatia_ud and I wondered if robust party machines built w/ patronage and clientelism might teach us something. Our answer, in @apsrjournal: doi.org/10.1017/S00030554261…

Yesterday was the publication day for Folke Leander's book *The Philosophy of Paul Elmer More*.
The first review of the book has now appeared (from @ActonInstitute), and it does a good job demonstrating why More is worth reading today:

When I see reference to “Digger,” I think of the Diggers (17th c English reform dudes), and there’s a movie about one of them, “Winstanley.”
