74% of Michigan fourth graders aren’t reading at a proficient level. That’s a crisis.
Yesterday, the House Education and Workforce Committee unanimously passed legislation led by Rep. @deboernancy requiring evidence-based “science of reading” training for K-5 educators and literacy staff.And it was unanimous.
The neatest part? Hannah and Thomas got a front-row seat to the process, handing out Smarties and meeting legislators from both parties. Huge thanks to Rep. DeBoer for the opportunity, and to every Republican and Democrat who supported this effort and treated the kids so kindly.
Yesterday was proof that we can still come together to tackle tough issues. Hopefully, this was just the beginning.
Grand reopening of the former Coast Guard station near Holland State Park. Thanks to Park Township Fire department & Ottawa County Sheriff’s Marine division we were able to reopen this life saving venue.
I worked hard to get $600,000 in our budget to help make this a reality.
