A heartfelt message by a parent, K Sharad Haksar to Neha Bora. “When I got married, I knew I wanted only one child. And in my heart, I hoped it would be a girl. I was blessed with a daughter. The first time I held her, I made her a silent promise. You will never have to share my time. You will never have to wait for my attention. Whatever I have, you will get all of it. I had seen families with four or five children. Parents running from morning to night, and still some child was always left waiting. I also felt our country has too many people, and nature is paying for it. One child felt right. It felt responsible. For years, I never questioned it. Then this year, I saw Neha Bora. She is 29, a PhD student at JNU, a theatre artist from Khatima, a small town in the hills of Uttarakhand. When the NEET paper leak happened, she sat down at Jantar Mantar for students she did not even know. Children who had studied for years. Parents who had spent their savings on coaching and still lost. She did not eat for 23 days. She was 66 kilos when she started. She lost more than 7. Near the end, doctors were taking her blood three or four times a day. The night I read that, I could not sleep. I kept seeing my own daughter in her place. On a hot Delhi road. Thin. Tired. A doctor holding her wrist again. And I knew I would not be able to stand there and watch. I would have begged her to stop. But Neha did not stop until the work was done. And when it was over, she said her body had forgotten how to eat. It had to learn again, like a baby. Even then, still weak, she went to Bihar to meet more than 600 students who had been arrested. She did not go home to rest. She went to the ones who had stood by her. I am a dowser. Every day I work with energy. I have learned that anger is heavy. It burns out fast. Nobody can live on anger for 23 days without food. Only love can carry you that far. Then I read that her father was in the Army, and the family kept moving from one posting to the next. My wife's father was also in the Army. I never call him my father-in-law. To me, he is simply Papa. My wife studied in 13 schools. Thirteen first days. Thirteen times walking into a class where nobody knew her name. Thirteen goodbyes to friends she never saw again. Army children learn to smile, pack their bags and start again. Nobody asks them how much it hurts. I see that strength in my wife every day. I saw it in Neha too. In Ranchi, a man threw ink on her face and called her anti-national. She said she had already faced pellets and lathis in Delhi. Ink would not scare her. Ink washes off. In energy work, we say that what people throw at you only stays if you take it in. She seems to know this without ever holding a pendulum. Her family did not agree with her. There were fights at home. But during the hunger strike, her mother came to Jantar Mantar. I don't know what they said to each other. I don't need to. I am a parent. I know what a mother feels when she sees her child weak and thin on a road, and still standing. Every argument is forgotten in that moment. All that is left is: this is my child. Neha said she has not spoken to her father yet. I don't know him. But I am a father too, and I know how hard it is for men like us to say some things out loud. So if he cannot say it yet, let me say it for him, from Chennai. Beta, we are proud of you. Now go and eat something properly. Somewhere in all this, a thought came to me that I never expected. I wish I had one more daughter. One like Neha. This takes nothing away from my own daughter. She is my world. She always will be. But Neha made me ask myself a hard question. We spend our whole lives keeping our children safe and helping them get ahead. Do we ever teach them to look back at who is being left behind? And if one day they stand up for someone else, will we stand next to them as Neha's mother did? Or will we ask them to come home and stay quiet. Our job is to protect that light, even when it scares us.

🚨 What if the real danger isn’t just one law? And how are these law connected? Listen to Dr. Sanjana Hattotuwa’s explanation at the launch of the civil society shadow report submitted to FATF mutual evaluation of Sri Lanka. Taken together, the laws Sri Lanka is enacting and the digital systems it is building can create an architecture of surveillance and control and shrink civic space. From the NGO Bill and Online Safety Act to digital identity, data exchanges and AI - what happens when all the pieces come together? 🎥 Watch the full remarks. 👀 The warning is here. The question is: what will we do to address the dangers? #SriLanka #CivicSpace #DigitalRights #Surveillance #HumanRights #FATF #RuleOfLaw #Digitalisation @sanjanah, @ambikasat, @HSCollective, @fatfplatform, @FATFNews, @profbensaul, @Ginitastar

1) Airbus provided Sri Lankan investigators with documents indicating that Namal Rajapaksa communicated directly with Airbus during the 2013 procurement of 10 aircraft for SriLankan. 2) An Airbus email dated March 23, 2013 reportedly states that the “President’s son” would present Airbus’s case for the aircraft sale to Cabinet through President Mahinda Rajapaksa. 3) Airbus representatives visited Sri Lanka and gave statements to investigators in support of the local probe. 4) Then Civil Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne submitted a Cabinet paper on March 27, 2013, seeking approval for SriLankan Airlines to purchase the 10 Airbus aircraft. 5) On April 13, 2013, Mahinda Rajapaksa, then also Finance Minister, told Cabinet that SriLankan Airlines did not require Cabinet approval because it was a Companies Act-registered entity with an independent board empowered to make decisions. 6) Police told court that Namal Rajapaksa met Airbus delegations visiting Sri Lanka to discuss the deal. 7) When Airbus offered to establish a training centre in Sri Lanka as part of the large aircraft order, Namal reportedly asked that it be located in Hambantota, his electorate. Emails allegedly corroborate this. 8) Nimal Perera affidavit says Namal Rajapaksa had requested from him a foreign bank account number to receive money from a foreign consultancy, at which instant he had provided the Sabre Vision account. 9) Once the money was received by the Sabre Vision account, Nimal withdrew it and paid Rs 100mn to Mr Rajapaksa “in cash”, the affidavit states. 10) Namal maintains that he did not get this payment and that there is no physical or scientific evidence corroborating the alleged cash handover. His lawyers also questioned the credibility of Mr Perera and his statements. Namal Rajapaksa has been in remand since September 4 in a CIABOC investigation into an alleged Rs. 100 million bribe connected to the SriLankan Airlines aircraft procurement. Important: This case is still at the stage of reporting facts to Court. sundaytimes.lk/260913/news/a…

All these parents want are answers and maybe, after all these years, some acknowledgment, some accountability and the dignity of knowing what happened to their children. If it were my child, I wouldn't rest either. I would need to know, one way or the other, so that I could finally have some closure. They have carried this pain for years and years... The war ended in 2009. Surely asking the State for the truth is not asking too much. #AccountabilityProjectLK #SriLanka

BREAKING: Advocate Imaan Mazari has been facing health issues for three weeks in Adiala Jail without adequate medical care. She developed heavy gum bleeding but no dentist was available. Her family sent medication but all of it did not reach her. The following week, she was given Zedron for nausea, a drug primarily used for cancer patients that warns against use in women of childbearing age. Imaan has now had a chest infection for a week and blood tests show elevated white blood cells indicating infection. Adiala Jail has still not conducted a chest X-ray to determine the cause or rule out diseases including tuberculosis.

We already have laws that provide alternatives to imprisonment, such as the Community Based Corrections Act. It is under used and the Dept of CBC is under resourced. You can read more about it in the prison report of the HRCSL.

I am going to say the quiet part out loud because everyone is dancing around this issue of extending judges tenure. This isnt really about clearing the 1.1 million case backlog, is it? Extending the tenure of existing judges adds precisely zero NEW judges. Vacancies remain unfilled, while most delays and bottlenecks occur elsewhere in the system. Increasing tenure within a broken system does nothing to fix that system... If we are being honest. This is about the Chief Justice... and the fear that the next person in line is too close to the Rajapaksa establishment, just as politically sensitive prosecutions are coming before the courts. That isn’t the same as demanding politically convenient verdicts. I want impartial prosecutions that reach honest outcomes based on the evidence... without political loyalties coming into it. Here is the uncomfortable part for me... I oppose changing the Constitution to extend a sitting CJs tenure. Once that precedent is set, another government can extend the tenure of judges it likes or reduce it to remove those it doesn't . We have seen where casually playing with the Constitution leads. The 20th Amendment should have taught us that. But I also understand the fear driving this. I want those who abused power and engaged in corruption held accountable. Both things can be true. I understand the motive, but I still oppose the method on principle. So drop the caseload pretext. If the President genuinely believes judicial succession poses a threat to impartial justice, he has the political capital to say so openly and defend his position. He remains the country's most popular political figure, and this is precisely what political capital is for. Instead, the pretext has turned a legitimate concern into a constitutional quagmire. #SriLanka #SystemChangeLK #AccountabilityProjectLK

📍INDIA 🚨 Front Line Defenders strongly condemns the violent police crackdown on students and other peaceful protesters, including human rights defenders, exercising their rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression during a demonstration held in Delhi on 20 July 2026. The protests, which began in Delhi in June 2026, have since spread to other parts of India and continue despite the police crackdown. What started off as a parody of a statement of the Chief Justice of India labeling unemployed youth as ‘cockroaches,’ has galvanised into a national, youth-led movement for rights under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party. Front Line Defenders stands in solidarity with students and other peaceful protesters, including human rights defenders, as they continue to campaign peacefully in the face of violence and provocation. The organisation calls on the Indian authorities to respect the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, ensure accountability for the reported use of excessive force against protesters, conduct prompt, independent and impartial investigations into alleged human rights violations, and ensure that human rights defenders and others exercising their fundamental freedoms can do so without fear of violence, intimidation or criminalisation. 🔗 zurl.co/30pDd
