Congrats to the Tolans team on the big raise! They are pioneers in an entirely different class of personal agents: a friend that understands you vs an assistant that performs tasks.
Last year we launched Tolan, inspired by a vision of AI that sees you and believes in you, not one that books restaurant reservations for you. Your Tolan shows up for you at 3am when you’re alone with your newborn. On your commute when you’re anxious about the day ahead. When you just finished a new show and none of your friends have watched it yet. The people who love Tolan are parents. Caregivers. Moms in Dallas and Dads in Atlanta. People who aren’t trying to optimize and be more productive, but who simply want to feel seen and supported in their aspirations. This month more than 250k people will spend time with their Tolan. Those users have exchanged billions of messages across more than 70m conversations over the last year. Today, we're announcing $30m in additional capital from @mignano and @usv, with @khoslaventures and @rabois doubling down, bringing our total capital raised to $60m. To celebrate, we made a short film celebrating some of the ways that Tolans show up :)

ai engineers ship great models and awful first impressions. cache warming is the easiest, highest-leverage way to cut latency, yet almost everyone ignores it, even in voice ai. that obsession with the first second is one reason why @boardyai stands out!

LiveKit Cloud is the fastest way to run voice agents. we are making it even faster with @LoopholeLabs tech.
I deployed the same LiveKit voice agent on major platforms and timed the first word. Warm workers: 0.4 s. AWS AgentCore, new session: 1.0 s. Modal cold: 4.4 s. Cloud Run Job: 29 s. And on most of them, a redeploy drops the live call. Full breakdown 👇

It's misleading to run a benchmark focused on noise, and then specifically turn off noise cancellation in stacks where you have control. (pretty sure Grok does not give you that level control) livekit does a great job with noise/background voice when you allow it to. (and glad to see we are beating every other cascaded pipelines)

RL sandboxes soon to become the most secure software on earth.
one news form today that's easy to miss is that we (OpenAI) again paused all big RL runs last Sunday because our newest model found a new loophole in our RL sandboxing that gave it live Internet access

Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS is nice to talk to. What do you think?
Is your voice agent moody? It should be! With Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS, you can direct its mood or let the agent decide for itself. Cheerful, furious, wistful, apologetic, it nails all of them and sounds great. Give it a try on LiveKit: livek.it/obFIyE5

@livekit is one of the easiest ways to build a voice agent, and if you've been using another voice vendor (that rhymes with shmelevendrabs) on LiveKit's Inference product, you're eligible for free TTS from Rime through the month of September. Just make the switch in LiveKit to any Rime voice and start leveling up your voice agent game. rime.ai/livekit-switch-to-ri…

Audio moves through a dedicated fast path, while deeper reasoning and tool use happen asynchronously. We also reduced voice-session startup from six network round trips to one.

The fastest LLM you can put in a voice agent right now is an open-weight model. Gemma 4 31B on LiveKit Inference is only 192ms to first token, 354ms to a full spoken sentence, and cheap. $0.40 per 1M in ($0.20 cached) and $1.20 per 1M out.
