My transcription tool, Cockatoo, that I pay like $150 a year for, did a redesign became unusable. Everything bad always happens to me. Does anyone on media Twitter have one they recommend?

The 2002 NYT story collecting everything we know about what happened in the towers after the planes hit is grim, but then you get the occasional absolutely bonkers survival story. nytimes.com/2002/05/26/nyreg…

written about this extensively so often, but here it goes again Every country has that one city (at least) with that one neighborhood (wealthy) which is their version of the global good life, and if you stick to it, and many tourist do, all you get from your travel is the local variation on a comfortable setting. To see something truly different all you have to do is go a little ways away, sometimes only a handful of blocks, but usually a few miles away, or even a different city. It isn't hard at all to get more out of travel, but honestly, that's not what most people want -- they want to be in the same play, with basically the same actors, that won't challenge them, but with a slight change of scenery. Nothing wrong with that necessarily, just don't pretend getting far more out of travel isn't really easy.
modern travel is increasingly flying 10 hours to experience a slightly different version of the same globally optimized lifestyle. same third wave coffee. same natural wine bar. same brutalist menu. same sourdough. same beige hotel. same tasteful ceramics. same instagram lighting. what a ridiculous convergence.

I spoke to young women who had been sex trafficked here in the US as girls, and they all described the disconnect between public outrage at Jeffrey Epstein's circle and public indifference toward the girls sold at cheap motels in every city. A gift link: nytimes.com/2026/07/29/opini…

The fact that you can't even make out on a bench in Central Park without someone recording you on their iPhone and then posting it to social media as some kind of bit is everything that's wrong with society and I am not joking. The surveillance state (administered by an actual state or by the millions of people with phones who want to embarrass people on their TL) is essentially the least romantic thing imaginable in both the love sense and the living sense. It is anti-romantic and anti-life. Part of the reason why the before world was fun was the fact that you didn't have this kind of thing. The ability to do something without it being documented and recorded is the difference between being free vs an animal locked in a cage. There is a direct correlation between everyone constantly being afraid that someone is going to record them and post it somewhere and society becoming more neurotic, less fun, more boring, and less alive. The self-administered surveillance state is the enemy of life.

I analyzed over 10 million lines of public data to build a (free) tool for NYC renters. You can check any building across all five boroughs. It consolidates rent stabilization records, bedbug, pest, and mold reports, and management company patterns. In the last 5 years across NYC apartment buildings: - 43% had immediately hazardous violations - 39% had confirmed bedbugs - 34% had mold complaints Some features: - rent stabilization status - bedbug, pest, and mold reports - a 0-100 health score for every building - data aggregated by management company - search by any address or click into a neighborhood check your building before you sign. nycstoops.com
