Customs said they don't have a list of confiscated books over the years when @ExaminerLK RTI'ed for them. There's effectively a set of banned books, but nobody knows for sure what they are.
Adding further to the list of censored Tamil books, on Thursday (22), Sri Lanka custom officials in Jaffna refused to release 30 copies of the Tamil novel "Thorai" by Pradeep Kunaradnam alias Yatharthan & informed the author to obtain a "permission from the Ministry of Defence".

Can people be jailed under the proposed Organized Crime Prevention Bill for having tattoos or long hair? Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara clarifies the proposed law in Parliament, rejecting claims circulating on social media.

We’re delighted to announce that the one and only @tylercowen, our internet writing sensei, is joining Works in Progress as a regular contributor. worksinprogress.co/issue/com… His first column is about Brazilian food, and like everything Tyler writes, it’s packed with hidden gems that make it much more than a food story. Some of the nicest tidbits: on her first trip to Brazil, his daughter declared she had “never had a banana before” – this is how good Brazilian bananas are, apparently. And Tyler and a well-traveled friend from Modena (of all places) agreed that Brazil is the third-best country in the world for Italian food, behind only Italy and Japan. If an Italian says that, we’d better trust him! But as always with Tyler, he manages to draw larger lessons from apparently mundane and object-level stories. So, in a short read, we learn much more than just the fact that Brazilian food is really good. First, food can be seen as a progress story. Brazil’s agricultural yields rival, and sometimes beat, those of the US, even though Brazil is a much poorer country. Abundant fertile land, high productivity, and short supply chains make ingredients plentiful and fresh. Tyler’s regret is that the rest of Brazil’s economy hasn’t embraced technology the way its food sector has. We also learn how immigration shapes Brazilian cuisine. Brazil has roughly 2 million citizens of Japanese descent, which makes it arguably the best place outside Japan for Japanese food. Tyler had a 15-course omakase at a Michelin-starred São Paulo restaurant for $110, booked just half an hour ahead. Brazil is also home to about 30 million people of Italian descent, the largest Italian diaspora in the world, which goes a long way to explain why his Italian friend was so satisfied with the food. The whole column is a delight, so do read it in full!

Ganasara thera has evaded acceptability for his criminal acts (threats / assualt etc..) for years.. his role in the Aluthgama riots in 2014 (the speech he made) & in fermenting anti Muslims sentiments between 2011 - 2014 was never adequately investigated (1/5)
Buddhist monks were stopped at barricades near the Presidential Secretariat as they tried to hand over a petition seeking a pardon for convicted colleague Ven. Gnanasara. A campaign to restore his robes whenever he leaves prison has become an appeal for a pardon.

Customs detained books based on nothing at all. While ministries kept passing the buck on. Unless someone is held responsible for claims made out of thin air, that violate basic rights, this circus will continue hrcsl.lk/wp-content/uploads/…

Funny because earlier this year when we asked the Malwatte Chapter about whether they’d disrobe Pallegama Hemaratne, accused of child rape, they said it’s a “voluntary” matter. His expulsion from the Chapter would depend on the trial’s verdict. This was of course just months after the Chapter publicly asked monks caught smuggling drugs to voluntarily disrobe. examiner.media/sangha-isnt-i…
Expressing their displeasure on producing Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara thero before court in prison clothes, the Chief Incumbents of the three Chapters write to the Commissioner General of Prisons that it is improper & that the authority for the removal of robes remains with the Sangha Sabhawa & requesting that the accused monk be produced before court in his robes
