You cannot leave prison without a documented place to stay, a job or rehabilitation program lined up, and someone to come and pick you up. There was one woman we met who was there for 2 EXTRA years at the state prison cause she had no living family and simply couldnt get a ride
"Because of Idaho’s overcrowded prison population, some women can’t access the programming that commissioners expect them to complete before they’re released... Those women remain incarcerated longer, delaying access for other women" investigatewest.org/prison-o…

you can tell a solo dev because they think this way in games, it's well known that tools programmers are unofficial designers. the nature of the tools dictates what designers build, and the limits of programmer imagination sets the boundaries for what can even be done. this "there is always one best solution" stuff is hot garbage pushed by people who work in a vacuum and can't imagine their work product as anything than a frame crane measured by efficiency in the real world, the work is collaborative and the code dictates what that collaboration is
Programming is not an art because there is always a best solution to a problem, its pure logic frontend design, game mechanics, then yes that can be a creative expression but i never heard of someone claiming while making a database architecture that they are making art

This is what people need to understand. This isn’t new. None of this is ‘just happening’. The problem is that Black and Indigenous people have been so dehumanized that their public state sponsored murders don’t count as violence.
Public executions by firing squad are no different than Sunday afternoon public lynchings of Black Americans. The bloodlust is the same.

🚨 Latest from the border wall blockade: one land defender still locked down to machinery, Border Patrol has wrapped a Mylar blanket around them and is running the truck and pumping the blanket full of exhaust to try to gas them out, potentially killing them.

a level of humility, grace, and unfailing positivity is demanded of chronically ill/disabled people in the face of abject suffering that the average healthy person couldn’t muster on their best day. anything to minimize the slight discomfort our existence causes them!
“People with chronic illness are so whiny.” Think about the last time you were really ill: unable to clean, do hobbies, work, etc. Just sore, symptomatic and miserable. Now imagine that… for life. How would your mental health be? Would you have trouble staying positive?

they’ve been executing Black people in public for centuries. what do you think a lynching is? it’s a public execution. they executed Michael Brown and Philando Castile. your “margins of permission” exclude Black people, because it’s okay to kill us but not anyone else, right?
They’re live-streaming the execution of the person they think they can get away with doing that to first. It’s a test. If they can do that, they’ll expand the margins of permission.

To be honest, most people in this settler colony are likely desensitized to live-streamed government murder given the way that police executions of Black and other vulnerable people are circulated and consumed ad nauseam.

I work in tech and it's not self-defeating or irrational at all tbh. Y'all did the PE rent-seeking squeeze on every facet of human existence you could stick a computer into and now you're shocked that people want to string you up.
I think ppl working in the technology industry should understand that middle America is starting to hate us in a really visceral, potentially unrecoverable way It’s totally self-defeating and irrational on the part of middle America, but it’s very real and getting worse fast

People got mad at me for saying many tech journalists see their role as boosting the industry not critically covering but... I mean...
Chat, if you’re a tech journalist should you be giving “a toast in support of building new data centers?” (From @washingtonsun) washingtonsun.com/national/a…

some friends who've done programming systems for kids have described 'Photo Booth'-type stuff as a big attractor, where the kids immediately gravitate toward making webcam+filter applications -- that inherent attraction to messing around with images of yourself/friends
I’ve actually often thought that JibJab was the harbinger of all slop. Seeing people you know inserted in fantasy situations is a deeply animating impulse for the human race for some reason

I’m saddened to see some of you all engage in the 9,782nd round of discourse about “antisocial behavior on the left” as though we aren’t all living in a 4chan Thunderdome now. Get a grip people!

seems like the values of many leftists are still very intentionally planted in the space between ‘acceptably progressive’ and ‘too woke/cringe/inconvenient’, and there’s actually a really helpful name for that already. it’s called being a liberal

Somehow every line of this article is more evil than the last. Taking trusted small media brands and driving them into the toilet before consumers catch up is just an arbitrage play, it’s just arbitraging trust, credulity and people being busy. These guys are demons.

AI-free companies may in fact have an advantage, if people were to create them
I am done with this shit. It is over. The state of engineering right now is horrible. It has been half a month since I started a new role at a big company. Nobody knows anything here. The specs, code, tests, PRDs, tickets, resolution of those tickets, reports, etc., everything is made by Claude Code. Nobody on my team likes this. They are being forced to ship as much as they can. I have heard multiple times from higher management that pushing code is not a bottleneck, so why are we slow? People are working 12 to 13 hours a day just to press enter. Nobody is reading anything. Humans in corporate are doing nothing on their own. Everyone, literally everyone, from an L1 to an L7 engineer here is doing the same thing. Talk to Claude. There is no sense of victory. Nobody is resolving bugs. In reality, nobody is thinking anymore. Everything is done by LLMs. It is so soul-sucking. I would not mind it, to be honest, if we were at least given the time to check out the code and see what is going where. But no, the goal is to just ship. No matter what happens.

One of the most effective things LA leadership can do to reign in spending and have continual EFFECTIVE case management is to bring homeless services back to being a city run. No more 1,000+ non profits of varying efficacy + a ton of well paid stably employed city workers.
BREAKING: Prosecutors announce new charges and arrests for alleged homeless services fraud in the L.A. area. One nonprofit leader is accused of misappropriating over $7.5 million, spending much of it on a nightclub and bingo hall. LAist story coming soon. justice.gov/usao-cdca/pr/2-d…

NYPD cops roughed up a civilian for *standing on the sidewalk* in a spot where NYPD Sgt. William McKnight (badge #: 3576) wanted to *illegally park his car.* And NYPD leader Jessica Tisch & Deputy Chief Michael Baker say that *the civilian* is the one who acted "unlawfully"!

There are very clear social, economic and bio-physical reasons why first world consumption standards are not sustainable on a worldwide scale, something that has been noted as early as the 70’s and continues to be born out by the science
If you believe “under communism” anyone’s standard of living will decrease in any perceivable way then you might be a little stupid
