Special thanks to @FChrisBennett and @nachoriko for the wonderfully written primer on our new microglia cannibalism publication. It’s so amazing when such exceptional scientists write about our work!
Microglia can selectively clear neurons, but what else do they eat? @FChrisBennett & @nachoriko explore a #PLOSBiology study showing that #microglia also cannibalize other microglia, followed by microglial necroptosis Primer: plos.io/4f7sXEs Paper: plos.io/3Aj1JvE

Microglia cannibalism!!!!
Microglia are considered long lived, but @cssmity &co show that individual embryonic #microglia die within 3 days after clearing neural debris and are cannibalized by existing microglia, paradoxically leading to additional microglial death #PLOSBiology plos.io/3Aj1JvE

I am excited for our most recent publication led by Jake Brandt (now postdoc with @SD_Ackerman). Jake's work reveals spontaneous activity in DRG glia in the early phases of its assembly. Interestingly to us, a part of the activity was dependent on mechanical channels. 🧵👇
.@cssmity &co show that satellite #GlialCells in the #PNS display isolated spontaneous Ca2+ transients, sensitive to #mechanosensitive protein #Piezo1, revealing a role for #mechanobiology in the activity of developing neural cells #PLOSBiology plos.io/3t0Ko6w

Jake's contribution to the lab was so important for our future work! In particular, he introduced calcium imaging to the lab, which opens up our ability to do circuit analysis (coming soon!)!

Finally, Jake made a personal dream come true...we somehow snuck in a Star Wars reference to our research! Next up, legos! media.giphy.com/media/UsmcxQ…

R01’s are so hard for me to write. They have to be so safe and conservative and I just do not think about science that way. We need more mechanisms like DP2s and more accessible R35s. Imagine what we could do if we didn’t spend so much time writing low risk stuff.

Thanks @TheFrancoLab for hosting me @CUAnschutz to talk about our work on microglia! What a great group of PIs and trainees in an exceptionally collegial environment. You also can’t top the views!

It is simply the best part of my job when one of the lab members gets a well deserved award or publication! Congrats to Camden for her hard work and perseverance! 👏🎉🥳🍻👏 @NDBios @NDscience @UNDResearch
I am officially an awardee of the NIH F31 diversity grant! The funds will be used to investigate the colonization and differentiation of embryonic microglia. Thank you to @cssmity, my committee, and all the awesome scientists who have listened to me ramble, we did it!!
