it is unnerving to consider the possibility that there was, in human history, a brief window where all public knowledge was easily accessible for anyone with a computer, and that this window has now closed.
a new, year-long study found Google Search really has gotten worse, and top-ranking sites are "on average more optimized, more monetized with affiliate marketing, and they show signs of lower text quality" Also evidence of AI-generated top-ranking results

Gremlin : « Une rache. »
Dad: “That’s not a word.
Gremlin : « Mais si, sur la peau ! »
Dad: “Oh, you mean a RASH!”

this is an extreme example of anti-Black linguistic racism and language policing in schools, but the more insidious and everyday versions of this lie in curricula, pedagogies, discipline policies, and entire systems of schooling designed to uphold whiteness and anti-Blackness.

Dad: “You hair doesn’t get all tangled the way Gremlinette’s does.”
Gremlin : « Il y a plusieurs Gremlinette ici !? Parce que t’as dit Gremlinettessss ! »

“The benefits of being bilingual, with @VioricaMarian1, Ph.D.” is the theme of the latest episode of Speaking of Psychology by the American Psychological Assn. It is very interesting and especially relevant to a hot topic in New Zealand. Listen → apa.org/news/podcasts/speaki… 🇳🇿 🎧

When lawyers are no longer allowed to practise, they are disbarred. And when priests are stripped of their position, they are defrocked. This is a thread of suggestions for terms for other professions, starting with this one…
When florists are sacked, they are deflowered

Not quite sure I'd go that far but it's...actually true that Tolkien had a particular fascination, even an obsession, with Old Mercian and the medieval linguistic history of the Midlands. Mercian is the dialect of Old English he used as a proxy for the language of the Rohirrim in LOTR, for example.
Lots of interesting takes in the comments.
