Glad to share the artwork of our DNA supercoiling work now in the cover of @MolecularCell ! This cover was inspired in traditional Peruvian embroidery @peru 🇵🇪 to represent artistically our findings on apical localization of RNA polymerases on DNA plectonemes. #MarcaPerú #Peru

🧬🌊 New preprint from our lab: DO1 Cas9, the first Cas9 nuclease characterised from the deep ocean — recovered from a metagenome at 1,500 m in the Atlantic. ❄️Cold-adapted: it cuts DNA efficiently at low temperature, where mesophilic SpCas9 retains only residual activity. 🧵1/4

Interested in accelerating your team's single-molecule fluorescence and FRET investigations so that more time is available for biological discovery? Today, our team is excited to announce the release of FLASH and SPARTAN, our lab's workhorse softwares for data acquisition and data analysis, respectively. We look forward to working closely with the community to advance these platform-specific tools in order to accelerate the exploration of molecular biophysics and the role of dynamism in biological regulation. nature.com/articles/s41592-0…

Lovely explained!
Can bacteria have too many flagella? More flagella help Salmonella swim faster and spread farther, but building them slows growth. In our new preprint, we quantify this trade-off and predict an optimum close to wild type. 📄 doi.org/10.64898/2026.08.20.…

How do bacteria build their flagella? We’ve put together an animation of Salmonella flagellum assembly based on cryo-EM and X-ray structures. From the membrane-embedded machinery to the growing filament, here’s how the parts come together, step-by-step.

Congratulations to Karl Deisseroth, winner of the 2026 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. The @StanfordMed & @StanfordEng professor of bioengineering and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences is a pioneering developer of optogenetics, a technique that uses light to control the behavior of cells.

A big week for the lab! Two new papers on how cells repair DNA double-strand breaks: one on getting NHEJ started in chromatin, one on processing the ends before ligation. Years of work by a fantastic team.

Happy to share a new preprint from my group on polarity-resolved imaging of active Janus nanoparticles in liquid-phase TEM, led by @isabelpanicker and in collaboration with @katy_requejo, @moshe_assaf, and colleagues at UC Berkeley, UChicago, and the @molecularfndry. If you have ever wondered which direction the catalytic side of a nanomotor is pointing when it makes active jumps, we can now visualize that directly for ~100 nm particles. Using the power of liquid-phase TEM together with SAM-EM, we can distinguish the high-contrast Pt side from the low-contrast polystyrene side and correlate particle polarity with its motion in the presence of chemical fuel. If you want to read more, check out the manuscript! doi.org/10.26434/chemrxiv.15… @gatechengineers @GTChBE

How do DNA duplexes recognize and pair with each other? Thomas Catley, @VVBerrelleza, @alicepyne and myself present the first direct visualization of DNA-DNA pairing mediated by divalent cations, confirming the decade-old DNA zipper model! doi.org/10.1093/nar/gkag817

Finally out in @Cellcellpress! Proteins with long intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are prone to misfolding during protein synthesis. This is prevented by mRNA 3′UTRs that act as mRNA-based IDR chaperones. cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092…
