Scooplet: Dems on the House Armed Services Committee are discussing reviving an Oversight Subcommittee if they're in control next year. It's still TBD, but underscores the long list of issues at Hegseth's Pentagon Dems want to scrutinize. w/@marksatter politico.com/live-updates/20…

Happening now: Top Pentagon officials are briefing the House Armed Services Committee on the military's FY2027 budget request, one of the panel's last opportunities to hear from DOD before Election Day. Feinberg, Hurst, Duffey, Michael, Meink and Mahoney among the briefers.

In the Pentagon Papers case, the Supreme Court ruled that it is legal to publish top-secret info and that the free press has a responsibility to do so to prevent the government from deceiving the public, especially during wartime.
Publishing highly classified assessments from the Secretary’s orders book is a crime. It’s a betrayal of the force. And much of what they’re publishing is inaccurate. Of course, we demand candid military advice. Non-concurs are standard. The Secretary sees them constantly. That’s how you run a real military. We are in great shape around the world. This story isn’t about readiness. It’s TDS and PDS — they hate President Trump and Secretary Hegseth more than they love America.

While leaking classified material is illegal for government employees, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in New York Times Co. v. United States (1971) that the First Amendment protects the press's right to publish classified information of public interest. nytimes.com/2016/06/30/ins…

NEW: The main U.S. air war command center in the Middle East suffered a direct hit soon after the war with Iran began and was severely damaged, sources tell Air & Space Forces Magazine. The Combined Air Operations Center at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar was hit by Iranian missiles. A secondary facility in South Carolina filled the gap. airandspaceforces.com/us-air…

Maybe if Defense News hadn't laid off or pushed out the entirety of its staff, it wouldn't make embarrassing mistakes like this:

White House adviser Peter Navarro just said the moon offers a "military advantage." Turns out the Space Force is making plans, per this piece by @calbon: airandspaceforces.com/space-…
Replying to @RealPNavarro
The Moon is where military advantage, industrial capacity, technological leadership, and geopolitical influence all converge. It is a logistics hub, a science outpost, and a proving ground for deep-space industry. And a potential source of oxygen, rocket fuel, and ice deposits for drinking water.

So many ironies. NYT, WaPo (and NPR and others) gave up Pentagon passes rather than sign a restrictive media policy that cast them as a security threat. It didn’t stop them from learning critical information, which they handled responsibly as they so often have.
First in @semafor: NYT, WaPo learned of the secret US raid on Venezuela soon before it was scheduled to begin but held off publishing what they had at the administration's request to avoid endangering US troops

“For reasons I don’t understand, it’s just gone.” — A thought I’ve had so many times over the last year or so about @defense_news and @MilitaryTimes. Great publications doing important work, now a shell of what they once were
