Very strange response to @BowGroup's recent cost of rejoining the EU projection from @10DowningStreet Firstly the figures are entirely realistic-secondly unless the government are planning to rejoin the EU why would they respond so negatively to a realist assessment of doing so?
Britain could be forced to make radically greater payments into the EU if the country reverses Brexit. Calculations by the Bow Group think tank suggest the UK's gross contribution could hit between £28billion and £41billion if the country signs back up. That figure would dwarf the £14.4billion paid in 2019, working on the assumption that Brussels would never agree to restore Margaret Thatcher's permanent rebate. Thatcher's former aide Lord Redwood warned that the country cannot afford the move, saying: "The UK would need to impose a large new tax; we cannot afford to go in." Former UKIP deputy leader David Campbell Bannerman went even further, insisting: “We would be mad to rejoin and anyone trying to rejoin should be prosecuted for misconduct in public office.” Bow Group chairman Ben Harris-Quinney claimed Labour is quietly setting Britain on a path back into the bloc, bringing with it the euro, heavy regulations, and uncontrolled borders. And Eurosceptics pointed directly to Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis, who openly backed Britain returning by declaring: “Yes of course. We need more money.” Conservative shadow foreign minister Wendy Morton questioned the priorities, arguing that Andy Burnham cannot find cash for defence yet seems comfortable handing billions to Brussels. Reform UK also warned that re-entering would betray 17.4 million voters and threaten £164billion worth of post-Brexit trade agreements. Yet pro-EU group Best for Britain dismissed the calculations as completely inaccurate, arguing the claims ignore £92billion in potential GDP growth and compare to filing a tax return without listing business expenses. A Government spokesperson insisted the figures are completely speculative and stated that ministers are focused on building an ambitious relationship with the EU to strengthen the economy. #NewsForYou

The Bow group say it will cost the UK up to £41 bn a year or £1400 per household to be back under EU direction. The last thing the UK needs is more tax to pay for more wasteful government spending. We cannot afford two governments again.

If Mr Burnham wants to live in the past will he review the anti Brexit forecasts that said there would be a recession with a rise in unemployment and a fall in house and share prices if we voted out? Instead house and share prices rose, unemployment fell and growth continued.

If Mr Burnham wants to expose foreign influence in the Brexit referendum he should look into President Obama, the IMF, the OECD and the EU itself. How many more would have voted for Brexit without their false gloomy forecasts?

The UK has fought too many European wars with great loss of life. The government should ensure it does not get dragged into another one. The security guarantees we offer should be the NATO ones backed by US military power which makes the guarantee credible.

The OBR introduced fiscal rules from 2010 to control our debt.Government says they were tough rules. So how then has the state debt trebled over that time period? Remember Rachel Reeves loosened them because she thought government was not borrowing enough!

It's accepted as common knowledge Burnham is hugely popular-but it was only a few weeks ago he was described as being "coronated" His only test has been being gifted a safe Labour seat He received less electoral & media scrutiny than Starmer-whose popularity crumbled in weeks
"For Reform the bar is now set at a level they're expected to win every by-election-but this is a safe Labour seat where a Labour MP stepped down to coronate their new leader. It was always Burnham's to lose, it's entirely unremarkable." @B_HQ newsmax.com/john-gizzi/keir-… #Makerfield

Despite the very many tributes-the glee at her death evident on social media underlines the horror we are facing Ann was perhaps the strongest voice for free speech in Britain, but freedom of speech goes in hand with freedom from harm Britain has fallen to a place with neither.

I am greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Ann Widdecombe. A valiant campaigner for freedom of speech & against the scourge of gender identity ideology that continues to cause terrible harm. Below is a pic of Ann & me at a Bow Group event dinner in 2022. I will miss her. x

It is with such sadness that I say goodbye to Ann Widdicombe a lifelong friend of 45 years. I worked with Ann in the Bow Group and in the House of Commons. She was formidable, strong, honest and trust worthy. She could not have been a better friend to me. Good bye Ann . May you rest in Peace and later in the embrace of Jesus Christ. telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/2…
