I am so proud. Proud of @KemiBadenoch . Proud of my Party. @Conservatives. Having being the first non white Conservative MP post war; to see Kemi lead our Party setting out a Conservative agenda that my old friends Margaret Thatcher, Geoffrey Howe, Norman Lamont, Nigel Lawson, Peter Lilley, Keith Joseph, Peter Carrington and my old boss William Whitelaw would have also been proud of sends out a clear message. We got Britain out of Labour's mess in 1979- WE WILL GET Britain out of her current Labour's mess AGAIN. Sooner the better Kemi.

Jeffrey Archer's sudden passing away is more than a great shock; more than sad and even more dramatic than any of his great novels the 50th of which was due to come out next week..I spoke at length to him only last week. He encouraged me to write and gave a glowing review of my new book "What is Common about the Commonwealth" a few days ago. He was in good spirits and cracking good form. He lived an extraordinary life, raised tens of millions for charity, gave delight to over half a billion yes half a billion who bought his books , and yet had time to walk the strrets of Chiswick in 1994 and parts of the SouthEast over the 20 years when I was an MEP canvassing for me. He was humourous, knowledgeable, committed, loyal and above all else very kind. I was privileged to know him, host him and call him my friend. Dear Mary we will all miss him. Our hearts and thoughts are with you and the family.

Isn't there an inherent contradiction here? Too much information collected by Ai is NOT GOING TO GIVE BETTER MARKET PENETRATION. If too much choices are given to humans with information overload their natural instinct is to revert back to the know..to the familiar..to the comfort zone...and to not experiment. This mad Ai rush to collect consumer brand information is totally counter productive. It will crash the MARKET

Nepal Floods. In 2011, I warned that this would happen. I got the European Parliament to pass my Report. Nothing happened. It gathered dust in the Commission and Council. I sent it to the Nepalese Cabinet. Met with the then PM. Nothing happened. Now we are sorry. Ha !!
Nirj Deva , a former UK MEP (ECR group), was the rapporteur for the European Parliament’s own-initiative report Financing of reinforcement of dam infrastructure in developing countries (procedure 2010/2270(INI); final committee report A7-0213/2011).a5c822
europarl.europa
This is the document that addresses glaciers in the Himalayas (specifically the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region) and related flood risks. It is not a standalone scientific study on glaciers but a development policy report focused on flood prevention through improved dam and water infrastructure in developing countries, with strong emphasis on glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) driven by glacier retreat.
Key context and content
Debate and presentation (26 September 2011, Strasbourg): Deva explicitly framed the report around preventing deaths from floods caused by glacier retreat in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan range (and the Andes). He described flying over the region near Everest base camp, seeing dangerous glacial lakes, and consulting ICIMOD (International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development). ICIMOD had identified ~8,000 glacial lakes in the Hindu Kush-Himalayas, of which 203 were classified as extremely dangerous.27b676
europarl.europa
Accelerated glacier melting was causing lakes to expand and burst, producing flash floods. He referenced the recent Pakistan floods that affected ~20 million people and noted that traditional seasonal water release patterns on major rivers (Ganges and others feeding billions of people) were becoming unpredictable.
Proposed mitigations included controlled lowering of glacial lake levels via siphons, open channels, and tunnels (rather than attempting to repair natural moraine dams), so the water could be managed as a reservoir resource downstream.
The Commission response in the debate acknowledged glacier melting in the Himalaya and related GLOFs as a growing problem requiring specific attention.
The European Parliament resolution (adopted 27 September 2011 as P7_TA(2011)0409) call for:
Greater EU support for reinforcing existing dam and water infrastructure (and related early-warning/flood-prevention measures) in vulnerable developing countries, especially least-developed countries.
Attention to GLOFs and glacial melt risks in mountainous regions.
Prioritising optimisation of existing infrastructure, climate-resilient approaches, and multilateral cooperation given the trans-boundary nature of many Himalayan rivers and lakes (spanning Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan).
Amendments tabled by Deva (visible in parliamentary tracking) specifically highlighted acceleration of glacial melting in the Himalayas and Andes, rapid expansion of glacial lakes, the limited historical data on GLOFs, and the need for cross-border data-sharing and a possible UN-auspices agency for trans-boundary water hazards.bc9e6b

Adopted resolution: P7_TA(2011)0409.
No evidence appears of a separate, dedicated “Nirj Deva Report” solely on Himalayan glaciers; the dam-infrastructure report and Deva’s accompanying speeches/amendments are the matching source. The issues it raised (GLOF risk from retreating glaciers, need for monitoring, controlled drainage, and resilient infrastructure) remain highly relevant to ongoing Himalayan flood and water-security discussions.

I refer to my previous post when President Reagan gave his fullest support to Margaret Thatcher in 1982 when we went to war to save the freedoms of the #Falkland islanders and when I drummed up support in Washington DC. @realDonaldTrump
Is making a mistake.

Kirkpatrick Rebuked
By late April 1982, Bow Group pressure + Henderson’s media blitz + Weinberger’s support + Argentina rejecting peace talks forced the US to drop neutrality. On 30 April, Haig announced support for Britain. Kirkpatrick’s faction lost. (8/8)
4. John Nott’s Testimony
Defence Secretary John Nott later credited Henderson: “It was Nico’s work... that swung American public opinion behind us.” Without Henderson and Congress shifting, Britain would have faced huge difficulties despite State Dept leanings. (7/8)
Henderson appeared on:
• ABC’s Good Morning America & This Week with David Brinkley
• CBS’s Face the Nation
He portrayed Britain as moderate & law-abiding, emphasized UN Res 502 and islanders’ rights, and contrasted his calm style with Thatcher’s image. (6/8)

3. Sir Nicholas "Nico" Henderson — The Television Offensive
While the Bow Group worked Capitol Hill, UK Ambassador Henderson launched a major TV campaign to win US public opinion. He bypassed the divided Reagan admin (Haig neutral, Kirkpatrick pro-Argentina, Weinberger pro-UK). (5/8)
Blaker warned: if talks failed due to Argentine intransigence, the US must back Britain firmly. He framed it as resisting "smash and grab" aggression. Weinberger reinforced NATO solidarity. A key transatlantic conservative effort. (4/8)
The April 1982 Bow Group delegation was part of conservative alliance-building. Led by Deva, with Sir Peter Blaker (UK Minister) addressing a joint Ripon Society-Bow Group meeting on Capitol Hill alongside US Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. (3/8)
The Bow Group Delegation — Led by Chairman Nirj Deva
Nirj Deva (Chairman of the Bow Group in 1981) initiated transatlantic conferences with the GOP and Heritage Foundation. Under him, the Bow Group ran a major Washington lobbying push during the Falklands crisis. (2/8)
The Washington Lobby War: Britain vs. Argentina for American Opinion
Jeane Kirkpatrick — Argentina's Advocate Inside the Reagan Administration
Jeane Kirkpatrick, US Ambassador to the UN, was the Reagan admin's strongest voice for Argentina. PhD on Perón-era Argentina, close junta ties, saw them as key anti-communist allies. (1/8)
I was involved on the sidelines with these developments that transpired when Emir Hamad took over Qatar. .
In the previous narrative there was an ommission in forgetting to mention the key role that Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani (known as HBJ played in putting into action the plan of Emir Hamad.
I got involved when in July 1995 there was a knock on my door and 4 tall Qataris came to my drawing room. The first one announced that he was the Emir's cousin Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani — former Economy Minister and then police chief .
I asked him why he had come to see me. He said I was the only non white MP on the Conservative benches and that I would understand more than most the issue.
He asked me to inform the British Foreign Secretary ( Douglas Hurd) and the British Prime Minister (John Major) NOT to recognise the take over. He said that Emir Khalifa the father had not resigned but was under medical care in Switzerland under the supervison and care of Eisa Ghanim al-Kuwari and a team of doctors.
He said that Sheikh Hamad's coup beautifully executed at Rayyan Palace with the cabinet and foreign ambassadors in attendance and broadcast over TV and radio was a take over and that Emir Khalifa had not resigned.
I got immediately in touch with the Foreign Secretary who asked me to be in constant touch with my dear friend Jeremy Handley the Minister of State at the FCO. We met daily to discuss developments as the French and then the Americans had already recognised the new regime.
All defendants present at the trial, including Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim, pleaded not guilty to charges of treason and conspiracy to overthrow the ruler.
The legal proceedings shifted dramatically through the Qatari court system:
In February 2000 Qatar’s Supreme Criminal Court initially convicted Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim along with 32 other core plotters, sentencing them to life imprisonment. The remaining defendants were either given shorter sentences or acquitted.
The state appealed the initial leniency of the rulings. In May 2001, Qatar’s Court of Appeal dramatically upgraded the punishments, sentencing 19 of the primary defendants—including Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim—to death.
Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani formally approved the harsher sentences handed down by the appellate court.
Despite the severity of the death sentences, none of the executions were carried out. Over the next several years, the geopolitical landscape in the Gulf shifted, and the ruling Al Thani family moved toward internal reconciliation.
Yielding to international pressure regarding trial fairness and seeking familial harmony, the Emir eventually commuted the death sentences to life terms.
The definitive closure to the 1996 coup aftermath came years later when the Emir issued a comprehensive royal pardon for the surviving plotters, allowing them to be released from custody.
This move coincided with a broader stabilization of internal Qatari politics and mended fences within the prominent tribal networks that had backed the deposed Emir Khalifa.
All in all as is said Rest in Peace
الرجاء أن ترقد بسلام في رحاب الله، يا صاحب السمو
Rahimaka Allah wa-askanaka faseeha jannaatih, yaa Saahib as-Sumuw.
"May God have mercy on you and grant you a place in His spacious paradise, Oh Possessor of Highness."
We must acknowledge that Emir Hamad together with his powerful right hand man Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabber Prime Minster had done a marvellous job in modernising a once medieval Emirate to a global power.
