This is what Britain’s fourth emergency service looks like. Look closely at those aerial photos. When a local field caught fire, farmers ran towards it, not away from it. They drove cultivators straight through their own standing crop to cut a firebreak and stop the flames reaching those homes. No blue lights. No sirens. No invoice in the post. Every homeowner and every insurer in those pictures has a farmer to thank tonight. This is not paid. This is what community looks like. It is the same people who pull your car out of the snow, and the same people who feed you three times a day without you ever once thinking about them. Tax them out of existence, make their businesses uninvestable and unsustainable, and you will miss them when they are gone. You might import the food. You will never import community @AndyBurnhamGM @10DowningStreet @angelaeagle @StephenMorganMP @TheFarmingForum @agricontract @loosecollie @GBNEWS @MartinDaubney @wheat_daddy #BritishFarming #FourthEmergencyService #NoFarmersNoFood #FoodSecurity #FamilyFarmTax
This is one of our local farms. When farmers are gone, who helps ? When a field catches fire, something remarkable happens in the countryside. Before the last fire engine has even arrived, neighbouring farmers are already on their way. Tractors leave fields half-finished. Cultivators and ploughs are used to cut firebreaks. Water bowsers appear from nowhere. Everyone has one aim: stop the fire, protect wildlife, save crops and, above all, keep people’s homes safe. Look at these photographs. See just how close the flames came to those houses. I’ve often said that farmers are Britain’s fourth emergency service, and days like this prove it. They don’t ask who owns the field or whose problem it is. They simply turn up. It’s time this Government @UKLabour started recognising farmers for what they really are: not just food producers, but environmental custodians, protectors of our countryside and champions of our rural communities. The next time you see a farmer driving towards a fire instead of away from it, remember that’s what real public service looks like. @FarmersWeekly @FarmersGuardian @BBCBreakfast @SkyNews @loosecollie @GBNEWS @MartinDaubney @agricontract @JeremyClarkson

Under a Binface government, anyone who doesn’t accept human-made climate change as fact will be sent back to school, from Year 1 right the way to A Levels, to see if anything goes in the second time round. #VoteBinface

In December, the Govt will decide if it will renew the glyphosate licence until 2041… •That’s 15 more years of impacts on worms, bees, soils and run-off into ponds and rivers, and glyphosate in your food. Sign Garden Organic’s petition NOW to ban this dangerous herbicide.

If a practice is too cruel for food produced in Britain, it should be too cruel for food imported into Britain. I spoke in Parliament to argue that higher welfare standards on British farms should not be undermined by lower-welfare imports.

"We have a five- or six-party-system trapped in the body of a two-party electoral system." @ProfTimBale explains why multi-party politics is here to stay 👇 Voters want real choice. We need a proportional voting system that makes it possible.

When there are some parts of the job you enjoy so much, namely hanging out with @Riverford suppliers, that you just want to take everyone else you work with along with you so they don't miss out. Plus, everyone should understand the field to plate process.

In 2023, our energy bills cost £43BN more than they should have because we allow the global price of gas to set the domestic price of green energy... it's bonkers. Time to break the link.

The fact that no one cares about this will forever be a mystery to me. Stupidity? Cognitive dissonance? Evil? IDK. But it really pisses me off that the people doing nothing are taking all of us - and all species - with them. 🤬 apnews.com/article/climate-u…

Because no one party can speak for the whole of Britain. Because the value of our vote shouldn't depend on our postcode. Because we want to be able to vote for what we truly believe in. Because governments make better decisions when every voice is heard. We need #PRnow

Some Szechuan pepper trees @Riverford actually looking alright & fruiting! They were not planted by me. Hope these two things are not related. Gonna focus on wondering what delights the @RiverfordFK may make from them #RiverfordAgroforestry

Spent a lovely bank holiday tea picking at Dartmoor Estate Tea, just outside of #Ashburton Even had a wee delectable taste of some they'd made earlier. If you're after a Devon grown, almost organic cuppa would very much recommend dartmoorestatetea.com/

"If politicians can write off millions of voters, we don't have democracy." In her bestselling book "Minority Rule", @ayocaesar points out the injustices at the heart of our political system which marginalises young people and other underrepresented groups. Well put! 👇

who's going?? 🌱The UK needs to have a nature-friendly farming budget big enough to meet the scale of need and make sure small farms get their fair share. Join the #FoodInOurHands march on April 26th in London: landworkersalliance.org.uk/f…

Whilst the sun and dry conditions are lovely and helpful for a lot of farm work this is also the first year in its history when @Riverford 's home farm has had to irrigate crops in March. This is worrisome #theclimateischanging

Epically interesting day with fellow @Riverford co-owners learning how @edengeothermal works, tapping into below ground heat to then heat the bio domes and their new covered cropping space. Particularly interested in how this tech could be used to reduce imports.
