Making sure every child in our city gets the best start in life is a priority of mine as your MP. Was great to visit Southsea Infants to join Mrs Holmes on a ‘learning walk’ and see firsthand how teachers and school support staff work hard to ensure every child succeeds and thrives.

I would like to congratulate Portsmouth's own Agora Restaurant for being chosen as a Semi-Finalist in the category of Best Value Restaurant for the 15th British Kebab Awards. I am proud to see a local business be selected as part of these awards, which serve to recognise an industry that had contributed enormously to Britain, but which too often went unseen, unheard and underappreciated.

Following the incident in Eastney on Sunday 6 September we have continued to take action to support our city’s communities, liaising with public services and taking concerns to Westminster. This has included a meeting with the Minister for Border Security, with Border Force, the Home Office and officials across Government in recent days. That liaison has continued in the past 24 hours. The Minister has informed us that lessons are being learnt and that the Home Office and Border Security Command are working hard to avoid a repeat of the disruption and disorder experienced earlier this month in Portsmouth while ensuring the Government can continue to meet its maritime safety obligations. Robust contingency plans are essential to ensure security and cooperation between authorities. We have heard that the Government’s priority is to prevent such crossings taking place in the first instance and that’s why Ministers are driving down small boat crossings, with this summer being the lowest in six years. Crucially the Prime Minister met with the French President just a few weeks ago to agree further officers to be deployed further down the coast to prevent these kinds of dispersal crossings. We are welcome this latest intervention as Government plans continue to bear down the number of crossings. As Portsmouth MPs we understand people's anger and frustrations about small boat crossings and will continue to make sure our city’s voice is heard in Westminster and ensure further action is taken by government head on.
