How do we ensure that capacity building continues beyond a project?
By investing in people who can pass their knowledge on.
Together with @LegalPracticeRW, iPeace has trained 480 judges, prosecutors, lawyers and RIB officers on plea bargaining and victim–offender mediation. Among them, 27 were selected and have just completed a specialised training of trainers, helping their institutions develop internal resources for future capacity building.
The initiative supports Rwanda’s Criminal Justice Policy through our Uhaki Bila Mipaka project, with support from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in consortium with International Alert and Pole Institute.

🇷🇼🤝🇿🇲 Learning across borders to strengthen access to justice!
iPeace and the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) organized an enriching Zambia–Rwanda exchange on legal aid and paralegals. It connected DIHR’s work in Zambia with iPeace’s experience providing free legal aid and raising awareness of rights in correctional facilities in Rwanda.
A valuable opportunity to share practices, reflect on challenges, and learn how to better support people seeking justice.
The exchange took place under Promoting Justice and Human Rights in Rwanda, funded by the Embassy of Denmark in Rwanda.

As we join the world in celebrating the International Day of Rural Women, we reflect on an important finding from our 2026 Access to Justice Survey: 33.7% of women responding to our mobility question were not fully independent in travelling to access justice services.
Digitalisation of justice is an important step towards improving accessibility and efficiency. But what happens to rural women who lack smartphones, internet connectivity or the digital skills needed to navigate justice procedures?
Digital justice must not become another barrier for those already facing exclusion.
Through our mobile legal aid clinics, iPeace brings free legal assistance closer to rural communities, helping women understand their rights, navigate legal and digital procedures, and pursue justice at reduced cost.
On this important day, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that no rural woman is left behind in accessing justice.

Our survey confirmed that ADR can make justice more accessible and restorative—but its potential depends on people understanding the mechanisms available to them.
Following our campaigns at Huye and Nyamagabe Correctional Facilities, we reached 10,906 inmates at Nyarugenge Correctional Facility with information on Plea Bargaining and Victim-Offender Mediation.
By raising awareness of how these mechanisms work, we are helping inmates make informed use of them in pursuing their cases.

Access to justice is more than having courts and laws. It is about whether citizens can effectively navigate the justice journey.
At today’s symposium on “Access to Justice at the Grassroots,” organized in partnership with @LegalPracticeRW under the auspices of @Rwanda_Justice, we shared new evidence on the practical barriers citizens face when seeking justice—from distance and cost to digital access, legal literacy and access to legal assistance.
The study provides a closer look at the real journey of rural justice users and the barriers that can turn formal access into practical exclusion.
Key message: Justice may be formally available, yet remain practically difficult to access.

🥃 When Alcohol Gets Free Movement Drunk
Rwanda bans some alcoholic drinks. EAC law says goods should move freely. Public health says: not so fast.
A short legal pamphlet—with a little sarcasm.

From January to July 2026, we steadily expanded both our geographical reach and the number of people accessing our services.
In just 7 months:
📢 66,000+ people reached
⚖️ 5,100 people received free legal aid
🏛️ 230 clients represented/assisted in courts
🤝 431 cases resolved through advocacy
This expansion is demand-driven and has been possible because we do not work alone.
With support from the @NLinRwanda , the Danish Institute for Human Rights, @giz_rwanda and The Stirling Foundation, and through close collaboration with local authorities and justice-sector institutions, we are reaching more people in more communities.
Strong partnerships. Wider reach. Greater access to justice.

What a remarkable start: More than 13,243 inmates reached in a single day!
Yesterday, Huye Correctional Facility welcomed the launch of our awareness campaign on Plea-Bargaining and Victim–Offender Mediation with overwhelming participation and positive feedback.
Today, we bring the same energy to Nyamagabe Correctional Facility as we continue promoting informed, fair and restorative justice.
We are grateful to the @RCS_Rwanda and all justice sector partners for making this possible.

What happens when judges rethink their role in justice?
The answer came from our previous cohort, where many participants shared that the training changed their understanding of their role in implementing Rwanda's Criminal Justice and ADR policies.
Today, in partnership with @LegalPracticeRW, welcomed another 50 judges for the 7th cohort on plea bargaining and victim-offender mediation.

📻 Awareness matters!
The increased broadcasting of legal awareness jingles on local radios has contributed to more people seeking legal advice—particularly on family disputes and divorce.
In June 2026, 1,043 people received free legal aid—the first time we have supported more than 1,000 beneficiaries in a single month.
This achievement reflects stronger partnerships, improved outreach, and growing public trust in accessible justice.
When people know their rights, they are more likely to seek peaceful, lawful solutions.
