Blood clots are the number one cause of maternal death in this country, but pregnant women are not being told!
On World Thrombosis Day I am calling for maternal blood clot prevention to be an explicit priority in the Government’s National Maternity Plan.
So far, I have secured:
☑️ NICE’s commitment to review NG201, its national guidance on maternity care, to ensure blood clot risks are properly assessed at the first contact when pregnant
☑️ A review of QS201, the National Quality Standard for preventing blood clots, which currently excluded pregnant women despite them being at increased risk.
☑️ An interim statement published by RCOG aligning its outdated 2015 guidance with NHS England’s Maternal Care Bundle and the latest evidence, supporting more consistent risk assessments and preventative treatment ahead of the full updated guidance.
But it’s not enough - I need the Government’s support, and we need action to save lives.

We’re excited to share enrollment for HI-PEITHO is now complete! With 544 patients enrolled across 72 sites in the United States in Europe, this landmark trial compares EKOS (Ultrasound Assisted Thrombolysis) with Anticoagulation vs Anticoagulation Alone in the treatment of intermediate-high risk PE patients. The study was a collaboration between The PERT Consortium, University Medical Center Mainz, and Boston Scientific. We extend our congratulations to all investigators and enrollment sites involved in this one-of-a-kind trial that will inform strategies for PE treatment around the world.#pe #pulmonaryembolism #hipeitho @bostonsci @bsc_pi
