Figma acquisition shows how hard it is to turn money into software. You'd think for $20B you could build something as good as Figma yourself, but you can't. Software is art.

People keep asking variations on this question so I think it's time I added labels to our chart, or maybe some sort of timeline. – at Pa Tong, Thailand

What choices did you make that defined your entrepreneurial life and lifestyle? Decisions I made more than 10 years ago that have had the biggest impact 👇
1
High impact decisions: 1) remote work 2) hiring talent globally 3) allowing everyone who works with us to do so on their terms (they pick their contract type) 4) asynchronous communication over real-time comms 5) I have never used debt or funding in any of my businesses

Does any highly pragmatic entrepreneur actually hire anyone based on a CV? Such awkward made-up BS. Don't think I've read a CV in 7 years.

What's your go-to activity that takes less than 15 minutes and moves your business forward? Mine: (1) Read a book (2) Help someone with a recommendation, intro or feedback (3) Write something customer-related (4) Loom explainer videos for my team (5) Document a process/system

Disagree (and borderline loathe) companies that disallow side-projects in their employment agreements. It's not right to dictate whether people earn money from their hobbies. #sideprojects

For those maverick business owners and personnel managers upskilling their people: get an employee to create and monetize a side-project instead of doing a video-based training course.

Companies concerns about employee side-projects can be dealt with in contracts and company policies. Topics include illegal/ illicit projects, projects competing with the company, conflict of interest and rules around doing projects on company time.

Good business ideas... “I noticed a problem that needed solving and tried to fix it.” Bad business idea... “I noticed someone else making money and tried to copy them.”

The reason below is why I prefer solo-endeavours and majority stakes. That said, when working with others it's the number 1 reason to get a shareholders agreement UPFRONT.
Easy to find people with shared values in the outcome, hard to find people with shared values in the process.
