The barbaric sentence of amputating the fingers of three young prisoners—set to be carried out soon in Urmia—shocks the conscience of every free and compassionate human being. It is yet another chilling display of the cruelty at the heart of the clerical regime in Iran. Finger amputation is a blatant act of torture and a crime against humanity. The international community must not remain indifferent. Silence and inaction amount to complicity and embolden the regime to persist in its atrocities. Khamenei, the head of the regime’s Judiciary, and those who issue such medieval verdicts must be held accountable before the law.
If theft is truly to be punished, then those who must be brought to justice are the greatest plunderers in Iran’s modern history: Khamenei, the Revolutionary Guards, and the regime’s ruling elite—those who have robbed the people not only of their wealth but also of their sovereignty.
