IAEA is the 🌍's centre for cooperation in the nuclear field, promoting the safe, secure & peaceful use of nuclear technology. IAEA DG @RafaelMGrossi

Vienna, Austria
Joined January 2009
A new localized ceasefire negotiated by IAEA Director General @rafaelmgrossi took effect this morning to help prevent a nuclear accident in Ukraine during the military conflict. The eighth such IAEA-brokered temporary truce will enable repairs of equipment in a 330 kilovolt (kV) switchyard, close to the Zaporizhzhya Thermal Power Plant (ZTPP), that has been damaged by military activity. This will in turn strengthen the connection between the nearby Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and its sole remaining external power line, the Ferosplavna-1, and reduce the risk of another loss of off-site power. The ZNPP’s continued connection to the electrical grid is more important than ever as its fuel reserves for emergency diesel generators have been running low in recent months, weakening this last line of defence against a complete station blackout. Following demining, the repair work is expected to last several days, carried out on the frontline of the conflict and monitored by an IAEA team on the ground. DG Grossi says the Russian Federation and Ukraine engaged constructively with the IAEA to pave the way for the latest ceasefire, showing that persistent diplomatic efforts can yield concrete results that benefit both sides also in the most difficult and challenging of circumstances. The IAEA will continue its indispensable work to ensure nuclear safety and security during the conflict, DG Grossi says.

“This new power…is harnessed for the first time for the common good of our community,” the Queen declared at Calder Hall in Cumberland shortly before pulling the lever that directed electricity from the world’s first full-scale nuclear power station into the national power grid. 24 kilometres north, the town of Workington became the first to receive light, heat and power from nuclear energy. The first nuclear-powered electricity spread to London within four hours. 70 years later, nuclear power continues to be a reliable and low carbon energy source that many countries are considering or have added to their energy mixes.

Scientists in Burkina Faso have used nuclear techniques to develop eight new rice varieties that yield more, mature faster and offer improved grain qualities, helping boost local food production and reduce its reliance on rice imports. Released in 2025, the varieties show how scientific innovation can move from the laboratory to farmers’ fields and, ultimately, to the food people eat. The achievement was made possible with support from the IAEA and the @FAO under the #Atoms4Food initiative atoms.iaea.org/4dIx9fl #WorldFoodDay
