subordination of the particular to the universal or the part to the whole such that the former only exists in service of the latter, like a cog in a machine, is an evil pagan utilitarian scapegoat mechanism. the common good can never be such if at odds with the individual good.
What is the root of all the confusion about the Church's traditional teaching on capital punishment? Personalism.
Personalism is essentially the subordination of the common good to the individual good. The reason for this is the dignity of the person. This is easily refuted. The temporal common good is the highest of purely natural goods. Therefore, the subordination of the individual person to temporal society is not in tension with human dignity, but is concordant with human dignity since it is a subordination of the human person to the human person's highest natural good.
Personalism is, at root, a form of liberal individualism because it elevates the individual good above the temporal common good. It also does profound damage to human dignity because the dignity of man cannot be fully realised without the proper ordering of the human person to the highest natural good: natural happiness, which is the common good.

So here are two places where Aristotle, a well-known fan of essences, is perfectly aware of gradualism. Perhaps Dennett doesn't really understand the position he's arguing against.

At this point, until given clear reasons to believe otherwise, I just assume that anyone loudly defending "Western civilisation" is actively working to destroy anything about it worth preserving. This certainly applies to the current US administration.

This claim is completely undermined by the fact that this supposedly tiny detail, is in fact the universal medium in which 100% of the phenomena (including that tiny detail) are given and made sense of.

Thomists are like, "I am sorry your dog died. His non-rational soul was annihilated instantly." Augustinians, meanwhile, are like, "I am the opposite of a universalist. We may pray and hope yet that everyone goes to hell."
Becoming Catholic just to remain an analytic phil of religion guy is like eating a golden ticket to willy wonka's chocolate factory
