“It is a familiar rule that a thing may be within the letter of the statute and yet not within the statute because not within its spirit nor within the intention of its makers.” — Justice Brewer, Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States (1892)

A much maligned opinion, if unduly so.

Physicalism is certainly a coherent worldview, and, indeed, I would be a physicalist if nothing at all existed.

Would you rather feast on the Word or feast on the Word?
A MASSive amount of Catholics would rather “eat Jesus’ body” than feast on His Word. 😬

I’m a social conservative. Vance is not one of us, and this is a terrible misreading of what’s going on in that clip.
There's a pent-up desire among some social conservatives (Vance is one) that because normie Americans still tell a gay joke every now and then, that somehow they can rekindle the homophobic politics of the 1990's/2000's and push a backlash against gay marriage. This won't work.

Neither Unitarians nor Deists are Christians.
There were 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Just a reminder… -56 of them were Christian -0 of them were Muslim

I shook hands with a prominent heretical teacher this weekend, and surprisingly neither of us caught fire.

With the tongue out of my cheek: pray against heresy, that it will be brought to naught now as it has been before. Pray for the heretical teachers and their sheep. Pray for their salvation and their return to our fold.

Amazing:
Forgot to mention that a coworker w/ a MA in colonial American history said that he was surprised how few Catholics there were in colonial Virginia because “that’s basically the same as Anglican”. Convinced some programs only mention religion as a nebulous conservative influence

“Often the clergy has erred, often the priest has changed his judgment, the rich have sided with the earthly king of this age: yet the people kept the faith. Hence even of the Lord Jesus we may truly say that, even in corporeal matters, the Word has comely steps…” — Ambrose

One reason pro-AI Christians exist is because of the noetic effects of sin; another reason is cultural accommodation and worldly assimilation; but yet another reason is because such persons probably lack souls themselves. In this essay I will —

Well-deserved. Carson is an intellectual titan who deserves to be widely read.
BREAKING NEWS The 2026 #NobelPrize in Literature is awarded to the Canadian author Anne Carson, “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

Do I wish Adonis would win it before he dies? Absolutely. But he has won immortal fame for himself already with his writings, and one more award, even the grandest award, means nothing in comparison.

Two things are true here: 1. Justices Jackson and Thomas both have significantly above average intelligence. 2. Neither of them would have been appointed to the Supreme Court if they were white.
i am really sick of conservatives spreading the racist meme that Jackson isn't smart. it's a repeat of liberals who did the same thing to Thomas.

TransUnion v. Ramirez, Virginia v. Black, and Dobbs. Justice Jackson isn’t quite as independent a jurist as Justice Thomas is, but I think even her infamous dissent in Chiles v. Salazar is often unfairly maligned.

That being said, both were explicitly appointed to the Court on the basis of being black. I don’t think that’s outrageous. We can justifiably consider non-meritorious reasons for appointing Supreme Court Justices.

The Immersionists have even stranger opinions about Bible translations than me:
Why does no good Bible translation correct the KJV decision to transliterate *baptizo* and use "immerse," instead?
