A report by the Children's Commissioner has found Nottingham to be the fourth most challenging place in the country for a child to live.
The finding is heartbreaking, but not unexpected. Child poverty in Nottingham rose by 16% during 2015-2023 as a result of Conservative austerity policies.
Since being elected, Labour has abolished the two-child limit, which has greatly affected Nottingham, and increased funding for local services, but much more is clearly needed to tackle the inequalities shaping young people's lives.
Every level of government must work together to meet the needs of our city's children.

Tram Drivers. Ticket office staff. Maintenance teams.
They've had enough.
Strike action confirmed: Saturday 26 September through Goose Fair week.
The door's always open: But tram bosses are fast running out of track.
Our members deserve respect.

With 71 colleagues I am calling on the Govt to work with us on my bill to prohibit the development of superintelligent AI and champion an international agreement
We can then lead on preventing the extinction risk posed by superintelligence while preserving strategic AI ambitions

Britain's biggest energy supplier is the only one that doesn't recognise a union.
GMB has written to @OctopusEnergy founder Greg Jackson requesting voluntary recognition for collective bargaining.
Hundreds of Octopus workers are GMB members and they want a say on pay, terms and conditions. 🐙

The Bank of England has paid a record £35m in bonuses.
But their boss Andrew Bailey has previously called for wages to be curbed to halt inflation,
All as his staff are landing tens of millions in 'performance awards'.
One rule for me, and one for thee. It just isn't OK.

The press pursue a Black man to the end of his life and Parliament says nothing about their conduct.
Today, I raised the sustained harassment and intrusion Prof Jason Arday was subjected to in the days before his death and asked why Parliament is yet to see a statement on this.

RNLI volunteers put themselves in harm’s way to save lives. They should never face abuse or threats for doing so.
That includes the crews based on the Thames, who respond to hundreds of incidents every year.
They deserve to be thanked, not attacked.

Three years on, the evidence is overwhelming: ULEZ works.
The world’s biggest clean air zone is delivering cleaner air and better health for millions of Londoners.
Expanding ULEZ wasn't an easy decision. But the evidence shows it was the right one for our city. 💚

Reminder that Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 is a film about three women taking over an office and introducing free childcare, paid vacation, and flexible hours, resulting in a 20% increase in productivity.
Thanks to @RMT members for standing up for safety. This needs sorting. Lots of us need to catch the train for work and your members are at work on the train. We all need to get home safe. That's just basic. Thanks and solidarity.
Further strike action called on East Midlands Railway
RMT members working at East Midlands Railway (EMR) will take further 48-hour strike action starting from Sunday August 30 over ongoing safety concerns and major train faults.
Ongoing action short of strike remains on in which members are instructed to refuse to work a Class 810 trains if a list of faults including lack of air-con, door faults and non-working toilets continue.
RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that the union would ensure representatives will be permanently involved in discussions with both EMR and Hitachi to try to improve the situation with the 810 units.
“RMT is demanding that whilst these faults exist and until these trains are shown to be operating properly, they should be taken out of service.
“It is now time for EMR management to act on the safety concerns of our members,” he said.
24-hour strike action is also planned for September 16 if there are no improvements in safety and operations. Full strike dates are below:
00:01 hours on Sunday 30th August 2026 and 23:59 hours on Monday 31st August 2026
12:00 hours on Wednesday 16th September 2026 and 11:59 hours on Thursday 17th September 2026

For Labour’s NEC elections, I backed @JessicaLBarnard, @gembolton and @Yasmine_Dar from the CLGA slate with my top preferences, followed by @JOwusuNepaul , @catarnold_ and Kerry Postlewhite of Mainstream with my next preferences.
They are candidates who take party democracy seriously, which is exactly what we need on our party's governing body. I'd encourage other Labour members to vote for them too.

The big four banks have announced even more mega profits.
They're making billions more from the higher interest rates that are hammering households.
I'm backing a Windfall Tax on these excess bank profits to raise billions for action on the cost of living crisis.

No one should be pushed into poverty to pay their energy bill.
We need a Government that puts people before profits and ends fuel poverty.
Single-parent families, Black families and disabled households are more likely to be in energy arrears, the End Fuel Poverty Coalition can reveal today.
An analysis of the government's Family Resources Survey 2024/25 by the University of York found that almost 15% of single-parent households are in arrears – almost 3 times the national average.
Almost 1 in 10 Black families are behind on their energy payments, as are 6.6% of households with a disabled member. (1/3)
