Martha MacCallum CHALLENGES Abdul El-Sayed on Government Healthcare — His Response Turns the Spotlight on Political Donations
Martha MacCallum: In the UK, more than half the people who died in England in 2023 were on the NHS waiting list and couldn’t get care. Why would that be a better system for us?
Abdul El-Sayed: Number one, I’m not advocating for the same system as the NHS. We’re the richest, most powerful country in the world. The idea that we can’t do it better is ridiculous.
Do you know the average wait time to see a cardiologist in America?
Martha MacCallum: Tell me.
Abdul El-Sayed: Two and a half months. We pay 19 cents on the dollar for every dollar spent in our entire economy on healthcare. The average deductible is $4,500 just to get healthcare you’ve already paid for. The idea that we can’t do better is kind of insane.
Martha MacCallum: I think the question is about how to get there.
Abdul El-Sayed: We need to get corporations out of politics. The guy I’m running against, Mike Rogers, voted 19 times to keep prescription drug prices high. He took a million dollars alone from pharma and called himself a champion for the industry.
Martha MacCallum: Do you think corporations should be able to buy politicians in this country?
Abdul El-Sayed: Well, it’s a good question. I know you were fundraising in California last weekend, and you’re here in New York fundraising again.

Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face.
These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots. They came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first.
We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election and carried out one of the most essential functions of our democracy.
While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future.
