1/ Mind blowing story about Trump accounts by @RichardRubinDC & @ashleaebeling. Under Treasury's new rules, a company can donate stock to a child's Trump account; parents can’t pick the stocks, reject donated shares, or sell for 5 years. Some possible implications...

Fascinating paper. Not only have the TCJA corporate tax cuts almost exclusively benefitted high-income investors & employees—those benefits are also overwhelmingly concentrated in blue cities & states.

Gains are unevenly geographically distributed as well, since shareholders and high-income workers are more likely to live in large, high-cost metro areas.

New: At some private schools across the U.S., every student uses taxpayer money to pay toward tuition, thanks to the growth of school voucher programs. But these "quasi-public" schools face almost none of the scrutiny given to public schools. propub.li/4gEeJgD

Most police depts now restrict car chases.
But Trump admin gave Park Police free rein. “We got that rule changed in 24 hrs...The next night, they had so much fun."
Last week, police chased a stolen car in DC. The car killed a 46 y/o deliveryman on a moped.

My new piece in @DemJournal on why Congress should repeal expensing and move back toward economic depreciation for large businesses, as was the law for most of the income tax’s history. Could raise ~$2 trillion over 10 years. Here’s 4 reasons why: 1/17 democracyjournal.org/magazin…

Representative Karen Alzate's proposal to make Rhode Island’s richest residents pay their fair share in taxes was included in the new fiscal year 2027 amended state budget. Representative Alzate is a member of the House Finance Committee and strongly advocated for the tax’s inclusion within the budget.
“When taxes are repeatedly cut, especially for top earners and corporations, the state loses revenue that pays for schools, roads, public safety, health care, housing and local aid to cities and towns. Those needs do not disappear when tax cuts are passed. They simply get pushed onto everyone else through crowded classrooms, aging infrastructure, rising property taxes and underfunded public programs. The one-percent tax offers a responsible solution that asks the wealthiest residents to pay slightly more so that Rhode Island can invest in the future. This is not about punishment. It is about fairness. Working families already pay their share every day through income taxes, sales taxes, property taxes and fees. It is reasonable to ask the top one percent to contribute more when our communities are being asked to do more with less,” said Representative Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls).
