The Chinese hydrogen scooters are real and the swap-canister idea is clever, but they do not threaten battery EVs, especially not two-wheelers in India.
These are fuel-cell electric scooters. A 100 g solid-state canister feeds hydrogen into a small PEM fuel cell that generates electricity on the go to run an electric motor. It sounds neat until you examine the full energy chain.
Even starting with today's most efficient industrial hydrogen (steam methane reforming at 75-80% efficiency) you still lose energy at every later step: compression, storage and transport (10-20%), the fuel cell itself (currently 50-55% in vehicles), and the motor plus drivetrain. Overall well-to-wheel efficiency ends up around 25-35%. A battery EV using the same electricity delivers 70-80% of that energy to the wheels. The hydrogen route therefore needs two to three times more primary energy to cover the same distance.
Green hydrogen from electrolysis is even less efficient at the production stage (60-70%) and the complete chain stays in the mid-20s to low-30s percent. Future gains such as high-temperature electrolyzers reaching 80-90% and fuel cells targeting 68-72% peak could lift the hydrogen pathway toward 50-55%. That is an improvement, yet it remains well below a battery EV. The reason is structural. A battery stores electricity with one high-efficiency electrochemical step. A fuel-cell vehicle must first turn electricity into chemical bonds and then turn those bonds back into electricity. Each conversion brings unavoidable thermodynamic and kinetic losses. Those two extra steps cannot be engineered away.
For urban two-wheelers the efficiency penalty is especially harsh. Range, weight and refill speed matter, but energy cost and infrastructure scale matter more. India already has a large and fast-growing battery-swap and charging network for two-wheelers. Building a parallel low-pressure hydrogen production, purification, compression and canister-swap system on top of that would be an expensive way to deliver fewer kilometres per kilowatt-hour.
Hydrogen can still find uses where its other strengths outweigh the efficiency gap, such as long-haul trucks, buses, ships or aircraft, because energy density and 10-15 minute refuelling become more valuable than raw well-to-wheel numbers. Even there the timeline is a decade or more of cost cuts, infrastructure build-out and durability gains, and it remains an optimistic scenario rather than a certainty.
For scooters and everyday urban mobility the physics is not close. Battery EVs start with a large efficiency lead and keep improving. The hydrogen scooters are an interesting demonstration, not a disruption.
EVs and ICE Vehicles Could Be in Trouble in Future?
China has deployed 10,000+ Hydrogen-powered bikes & scooters
1. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells with a 100g hydrogen canister
2. Runs up to 100 km on a single refill
If this technology scales further, Urban mobility could change dramatically:
✅ No charging time like EVs
✅ No fossil fuel consumption during use
✅ Quick refueling in seconds
The company has reportedly secured overseas orders for 50,000 bikes across the Middle East, Europe, the United States

Drop your take 👇 What do you guys think? Margins are temporary, and Sales collapse = real story? Or Margins are structural. Margin expansion was a necessary post IPO.
I think it's too early to tell, wait for Q3. Just don't start writing it off.

The short thesis was: "Ola is a volume-chasing company burning cash."
But what if Ola isn't failing... what if it's been grossly mis-valued post-IPO?
What if the real play isn't shorting Ola?
What if the real play is waiting for THE MARKET to realise what happened in Q2?

So now we have a REAL debate:
LEFT SIDE 🔴
"Ola is failing"
- Stock down 63%
- Sales halved
- Trust destroyed
RIGHT SIDE 🟢
"Ola's restructuring"
- Margins doubled
- Unit economics are positive
- Auto EBITDA profitable
Which story is winning?
Market says RED.
Financials say GREEN.
One of them will be wrong.

What actually happened in Q2:
1. Gen 3 scooter launched → higher ASP
2. Vertical integration ramped → lower cost per unit
3. PLI scheme eligibility → ₹10k per unit subsidy
4. Premium product focus → ditched race to the bottom
5. Software/MoveOS+ upsells → additional revenue per vehicle
They stopped trying to be "volume at any cost."

But the REAL story is here.
Gross Margin % per vehicle:
Q3 FY24: 16.04% (₹208 Cr)
Q4 FY24: 15.01% (₹240 Cr)
Q1 FY25: 18.43% (₹303 Cr)
Q2 FY25: 18.53% (₹225 Cr)
Q3 FY25: 18.56% (₹194 Cr)
Q4 FY25: 13.8% (₹84 Cr)
Q1 FY26: 25.6% (₹212 Cr)
Q2 FY26: 30.7% (₹211 Cr) 🚀
This is the most significant sequential jump Ola has EVER posted.
While @bhash was getting roasted on Twitter, his team was quietly fixing the unit economics.

The IPO momentum died. Share price collapse. Retail investors got burned.
But here's what most analysts missed: while everyone was looking at the headline numbers, the underlying unit economics were doing something strange...
Something GOOD.
Let me explain.

Let's be honest first:
• Sales crashed 50% YoY (52,666 units in Q2)
• Revenue tanked 43% (₹688 Cr)
• The Kunal Kamra drama was a PR nightmare
• Service complaints were real.
I get why people think it's all over.
Take @TechWiser's take, for example.

But I just analysed their Q2 financials and something doesn't add up...
The numbers tell a story nobody's talking about 🧵
Hard braking for @OlaElectric – despite cost cuts and margin gains, Q2 FY26 hit with a sharp 43% drop in revenue and a ₹418 crore net loss. 🚨
