I've been studying various aspects of #protest & contentious #politics in #China for 25 years. What's happening now is novel, interesting, & potentially quite important. But we need to be careful about drawing conclusions or making predictions. A🧵: 1/22 @CamGeopolitics @NCUSCR

With coauthors like @YashengHuang @fravel and Lily Tsai, MIT writes a very well thought-out strategy for engaging with Chinese academic institutions. All major university systems should have a strategy like this: global.mit.edu/about/report-…

1: Two things jump out at me immediately from the US readout: The first is the reference to joint working groups - suggests a basis for (modest) progress and that there was some Chinese give on the suspension of various dialogues after the Pelosi visit. whitehouse.gov/briefing-room…

My unsolicited two cents: the White House has been too focused on defending the policy logic of withdrawal and not focused enough on empathizing with and accepting responsibility for the human consequences—or laying out a way to minimize them moving forward.
White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan: We have a proven ability to fight terrorism effectively without having a large military footprint on the ground – and we will hold the Taliban accountable to not allowing Al Qaeda to have a safe haven in Afghanistan.

This is such an irresponsible soft-racist headline. Hamster ovary cell lines are how labs all over the world make proteins. I repeat: they are universally used. They were developed in a Boston lab in 1957. Please STOP implying that the Chinese do weird things with animals

The mix of occupations that emerge after the pandemic may be very different. Our analysis shows workers holding customer service jobs in retail and hospitality, food service, production work, and office support are likely to face the biggest disruption mck.co/3qu450v
