I've been studying various aspects of #protest & contentious #politics in #China for 25 years.
What's happening now is novel, interesting, & potentially quite important. But we need to be careful about drawing conclusions or making predictions. A🧵:

With coauthors like @YashengHuang @fravel and Lily Tsai, MIT writes a very well thought-out strategy for engaging with Chinese academic institutions. All major university systems should have a strategy like this: global.mit.edu/about/report-…

1: Two things jump out at me immediately from the US readout: The first is the reference to joint working groups - suggests a basis for (modest) progress and that there was some Chinese give on the suspension of various dialogues after the Pelosi visit. whitehouse.gov/briefing-room…
My cents: 1.policy-making needs to be fast and agile. Delay have caused the market to go offshore, exposed more ppl at risk. 2.Merkel Tree Root disclosure should be required for all crypto exchanges as a proof of reserve, security token should not be their own Monopoly money.
The collapse of one of the largest crypto platforms shows how much of the industry appears to be smoke and mirrors. We need more aggressive enforcement and I'm going to keep pushing @SECGov to enforce the law to protect consumers and financial stability.

Another example calls for more crypto regulation: Merkel Tree Root disclosure should be required for all crypto exchanges as a proof of reserve. #Crypto #techpolicy #regulation #FTX #bitcoin #FTT #SBF

Here is a thoughtful piece by NYTimes on the final days of Dr. Li Wenliang, the whistleblower of the Covid-19 pandemic. He was also among the first few healthcare workers who lost their lives to this virus. Here is what you need to know about him:

"Dr. Li, it has been three years and my city is still in lockdown. Today I went to my balcony for a fresh breeze, and it reminded me of what freedom used to feel like. We miss you, we miss the days when you were still with us."
