In November 1941 the richest man in America drove his twenty-three-year-old daughter to a hospital in Washington without telling her mother, had two surgeons drill holes in her skull and cut into the front of her brain while she sang God Bless America to them, and when the singing stopped she had a mental age of two and the family did not speak her name for twenty years. Rosemary Kennedy was the third child and the first girl, and she was slow. A nurse at the birth had held Rose Kennedy's legs together for two hours while they waited for the doctor, and the baby had been starved of air. She learned to read and write, but late, and in a family where the boys were being bred for the presidency and the girls for the right marriage, she was the one who could not keep up, the one who had to be coached and watched and given the simpler part in the photograph. She was also, by every account, the prettiest of them, and when the family went to London in 1938 she was presented at court in a white dress and curtsied to the King without a mistake. Then she was twenty-one, and the trouble started. Moods. Rages. Slipping out of the convent school at night and coming back in the morning and not saying where. The nuns said she might be meeting men. For Joseph Kennedy, who was managing his sons towards the White House and could not have a daughter who might get pregnant or get talked about, that was the end of it. He had read about a new operation. Walter Freeman had promised the newspapers it calmed the agitated, and Joe Kennedy had never in his life been told that a thing he could pay for would not work. Rosemary was given a mild sedative and kept awake. Freeman and his surgeon, James Watts, opened the skull on both sides and Watts pushed a blade into the frontal lobes and swept, while Freeman asked her to recite the Lord's Prayer and sing, and count backwards, so they would know how far to go. They went until she was incoherent. Then they stopped. She came out of it unable to walk or speak. Years of therapy got her a few words and a limp. Joe moved her to a private hospital in New York and then to a convent school in Wisconsin, told the family she was teaching the retarded in the Midwest, and never went to see her. Rose, her mother, was not told what had been done until long after, and did not visit for twenty years. The brothers and sisters, including the one who became President, were told she was away. When Joe had his stroke in 1961 and could no longer manage the story, Eunice went to Wisconsin and found a woman of forty-three who did not know her, and came home and started the Special Olympics. Rosemary lived to eighty-six, in the convent, and died in 2005 with her surviving sisters at the bed. The brother who became President had signed the first federal mental health law in 1963, and the family has said she was the reason. Freeman kept operating for another twenty-six years. His notes on Rosemary have never been released. That is what the expert's confidence looks like when it meets a powerful man with an inconvenient child. The science was published. The father was certain. The daughter sang to the surgeon until she could not. Every institution that has ever decided it knows what is wrong with you and how to tidy it has the same two ingredients in the room, and the person on the table is still the only one who pays.

@TfL @TfLAccess whoever is writing the ‘Quote of the week’ that is on display in public view in your London Bridge Gateline Assistant pod needs a training refresher. This is the opposite of inclusion and actually quite offensive.

Unless they remove the trolleys there will be issues with the @H_S_E . I have this vague memory that stock trolleys can’t be left unattended for an extended period of time.

הלילה בחברון וברחבי הגדה המערבית, תושבים נשים וילדים הוצאו מביתם. ככה לא נראית מלחמה למיגור הטרור. ככה נראה טרור.

This photo from the Press regarding an incident in the market that police attended. Rather begs the question how any disabled person can get into either the accessible toilet or Changing Places toilet owing to the ridiculously placed roadworks signs⁉️#AccessFail

I last went in March, dropped off by black cab in front of John Lewis. I spent over £200 & pointedly told the 2 assistants behind the counter that this would be my last ever visit owing to pedestrianisation. “Oh is that going ahead then?” was the disinterested response.

Daily Mail: "£70bn borrowing to pay welfare bill" Reality: £70bn is the WHOLE Budget increase — 2/3 NHS/schools, 1/3 capital (hospitals, roads, housing). They cherry-pick a different forecast for sick/disabled support to blame vulnerable people. It's manufactured anger. Sources: OBR, Full Fact

DWP's own figures: PIP fraud 0% (£0m) FYE 2024, lowest overpayment ever 0.4% (£90m). HMRC's tax gap £46.8bn — 520x larger than PIP overpayment. Small businesses alone account for £28.1bn (60%) of the tax gap, yet government puts 2,000 fraud staff into Jobcentres where fraud is 0%

Fraser Nelson's "Boriswave to Burnham wave" chart is clever misdirection. Yes, Home Office CP1448 forecasts 1.6m settlements 2026-30 peaking 450k in 2028. But the £10bn is NOT for 1.6m people. It's lifetime cost for 196k care workers + dependants only. Home Office: "We do not recognise" the £154bn figure Reform UK is pushing. Govt's own saving from 10yr rule? £600m, not £10bn. Visa ≠ Settlement ≠ Welfare. Most are still NRPF & employed. Check it yourself on DWP Stat-Xplore. Source: Home Office Earned Settlement Consultation CP1448

Ppl were almost missing flights due to lack of staff. No food, drink or toilet near waiting area. No time to go to duty free, shops, eat or grab coffee even. Coming back, 4 of us held onto eachother w/chairs so we could be pushed together by 1 person or wait on plane for ages

Manchester airport is the worst airport I've been to regarding disability assistance. The waiting area for disabled ppl is a long long way from toilet. Clearly no thought. A passenger waiting for assistance like me had to push me to toilet because short staff.

Face-to-Face Assessments vs Award Rates & Employment What it shows: • Pre-pandemic: ∼80% face-to-face. • Pandemic: 6% PIP face-to-face in 2024, 13% WCA — 4/5 telephone, 1/20 face-to-face (DWP evidence pack). • From Apr 2026: DWP increasing to 30% face-to-face for both PIP and WCA. • Award rates almost identical: F2F 50.1% vs Telephone 49.2% = 0.9% difference — statistically significant but DWP says "very small". • So increasing face-to-face does NOT change refusal/acceptance meaningfully, and NAO says no evidence it boosts employment — but it does cost more staff time and increases waiting times (68k phone, 4.4k F2F in Sep 2024)

75% of IoM’s medical soc oppose assisted dying. Safeguarding concerns, worries about coercion/ insufficient access to palliative care. The law may have changed, but the medical profession (tasked with the responsibility) do not believe it is safe. 😔 bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8vg…

The Tories say more face-to-face disability assessments will cut the welfare bill. The math says the opposite. COST TO IMPLEMENT: • £190 per assessment (up from £115 = +65%) • £595m for 3.4m assessments over 3 years • £255m paid to Atos/Capita last year alone • £700m original contract → £700m+ actual (NAO: £1.6bn over 3 years) CLAIMED SAVED: • £1.9bn by 2030/31 GROSS • But only £164m is from higher refusal rate (44% face-to-face pass vs 57% virtual) • Rest is projected, not realised Translation: You pay £190 upfront to maybe save £50/week. Need 4 weeks to break even. Meanwhile 78k queue at 4k/month = 19 month backlog. And halving NICs for under-25s? Costs £5.1bn to create 38k jobs = £132k per job. Employers already pay £0 NIC for under-21s. It's a tax break for Tesco/McD's existing staff, not new youth jobs. Source: DWP Report 926, NAO, FOI 2024, CP1448, IFS "Take a chance on me"

BBC Sport approached @number10gov for a response to my letter to @andyburnham . The @DHSCgovuk responded and unfortunately this statement isn’t anything we didn’t already know. There are also fundamental inaccuracies within it. Please also bear with me; I’ve had an extremely large amount of messages and I’m operating with a very limited capacity. @Ed_Miliband @tessamunt @JoPlattLeigh @KatieFalkingham @BBCSport @BBCNews @UKLabour @ThereForME_UK @YvetteCooperMP

The DWP claims benefit sanctions save taxpayers money. Our new 10-year forensic audit proves the exact opposite. 📉💥 • 10.1M additional NHS mental health appointments(2022–2024) compared to 2021 baseline. • Direct correlation between Sanctions regime and mental health referrals and mental health contacts. • £3.26bn in excess NHS treatment costs alone. • Net public fiscal loss of up to £3.4 billion. Punishing the vulnerable doesn't balance the books—it bankrupts people & public services.
