Pretty confident Steve has the meteor event in GLM. It's also on GOES 17s #lightning mapper across northwest #okwx. Here is some background on how GLM can observe these bolide events. mdpi.com/1424-8220/19/5/1008…

This is certainly a case where the SST overlay of satellite imagery from @Weathernerds comes in handy! Right now the low level circulation is on the northern wall of the Gulf Stream.
If #95L continues on its NNE heading, it will move over much cooler SSTs in the next 12-24h.

Neat forecast evolution from the 3-km NAM of the tropopause polar vortex traversing across the NE today. Convection in the center of the TPV erodes the high vorticity at 500 mb (approx. tropopause level), resulting in a ring of high vorticity that then mixes back inward later.

These storms over the lower Mississippi Valley are putting out roughly 15,000 lightning strikes per hour via GOES-17 global lightning mapper (GLM). Impressive....

The MCS currently moving offshore was enhanced by the Guinea highlands yesterday evening. Looks like another MCS close behind. Not sure if they're both part of the same wave exactly. Will be interesting to see what comes out. Thanks @Weathernerds for the zoomable satellite!

Quick little KGRB radar animation of the ongoing #derecho over #Wisconsin capturing a leading supercell.
The vorticity from the supercell merges with the larger MCS, producing a larger mesocyclone within the line. A dangerous wind threat ongoing with this line. #WIwx

I really like @Weathernerds's interface for overlaying GLM lightning w/ #GOES16 visible imagery for Barry. The most active lightning is associated with a feeder band SW away from the center.
Pay closer attention to lightning on the SE flank, closer to where the mesovortex is at.

I'm a huge fan of the new #lightning options on @Weathernerds, available within the entire fields of view for GOES-16/17.
Here's a side by side of GLM flash extent density and radar for storms over Oklahoma ~1 hour ago. I can't wait see this kind of data in tropical systems!

Animation above was created via @Weathernerds's which lets you create custom Level 2 radar zooms for any radar across the US.

Heads-up #Florida... a cold front is coming through and bringing lots of lightning and gusty winds. #Tornado warnings and #severe thunderstorm watches have also been issued ahead of it. #flwx radar.weather.gov/Conus/sout… @Weathernerds

Lots of #lightning inside the eastern eyewall of Hurricane #Oscar today. In the absence of recon, RMW estimates are difficult, but from a best guess, it appears to have occurred inside the RMW. Oscar has continued to intensify throughout this phase, as research suggests.

Like other strong hurricanes we've seen this season, #Willa has started to show abundant eyewall lightning.

Major Hurricane #Lane remains a powerful category 4 this morning. The latest official forecast and ensemble guidance has trended closer to the Hawaiian islands. Interests in Hawaii should continue to monitor this system at prh.noaa.gov/cphc/ – at Richmond West, FL

Playing around with the cool new IR-ASCAT overlay from @Weathernerds and I realized the wave in the Central Atlantic actually has a circulation, or something close to one. Very little convection though - this extreme stability likely the reason.

#Hector is currently experiencing an large increase in inner core lightning. With northeasterly shear present, the movement of the GLM lightning suggests convection is rotating upshear.

How tiny is #Beryl? The pink line is 500 km, and Beryl is significantly smaller. Really useful measuring tool on @Weathernerds.
