El Niño communication is an absolute mess.
For example:
- Some are showing Daily Niño values
- Some are showing Weekly Niño values
- Some are showing Monthly Niño values
- Some are showing 3-Month Niño values
- Some are using Coral Reef Watch values
- Some are showing RONI
- Some are showing ONI
- Some are showing Niño 1+2
- Some are showing Niño 3.4
- Some are showing temperatures in Fahrenheit
- Some are showing temperatures in Celsius
- Some are showing anomolies in Fahrenheit
- Some are showing anomolies in Celsius
El Niño communication feels like the Wild Wild West, we've got datasets and numbers all over the place. We need to find a way to tighten things up.
NOAA changed its primary operational metric earlier this year, why is that not getting used more? The switch to RONI (Relative Oceanic Niño Index) was made because the traditional ONI was becoming increasingly problematic in a warming ocean. NOAA wanted an ENSO index that better represented the temperature contrast across the Pacific.
With that said, using the new official RONI metric from NOAA, you'll see this El Niño is not the strongest...yet. Since 1950, that goes to the 1982/1983 El Niño event. If trends continue, however, the current El Niño will beat it later this Fall into early Winter. Stay tuned...

Here's what the peak of this year's El Niño will look like next to the six strongest events on record that came before it.
It's in a league of its own, beyond even the “super El Niño” category.

One more day before a great #LaborDay weekend rolls in!
#LongIsland
Humidity is hanging around but thankfully not for long!
Over the course of the holiday weekend, it will be dropping as sunshine comes our way, mostly. A spot shower is possible Saturday PM.

Florida was slammed by the infamous Labor Day hurricane. The Category 5 remains the most intense storm to have struck the US directly. Parts of the Florida Keys were completely devastated, with estimates putting the death toll over 400.

On this day in 2019, Hurricane Dorian reached its peak intensity with 185MPH winds, gusts over 220MPH, and a minimum central pressure of 910mb. This is the strongest hurricane to ever strike the Bahamas since records began in 1851.

I believe this deadly mega flash flood / debris flow in Nepal was caused by a glacier break and instantaneous massive flood of mass down the river gorge

Climatological fall begins Sept 1 - this is an outcome of fixing a 3-month window for each season.
In reality summer and winter are longer than spring and fall so what you experience meteorologically is something different.
For NYC, Boston and Philly summer weather actually ends much closer to the equinox (based on local climatology).
