Earlier this morning, we held a press conference at Kolping Hotel in Kampala, informing the masses about the upcoming 5th Uganda Alcohol Policy Conference, slated for the 25th and 26th of November 2026 @MakSPH Auditorium. Uganda is ranked 1st in Africa and 5th globally as the highest alcohol consumption in Africa, averaging about 12.2 litres of pure alcohol per person per year, which is nearly double the African regional average. Alcohol has contributed to many of the mental health challenges contributing 20% of admissions in @butabika1955 and strain units across regional hospitals like, Gulu, Lira and Kabale. Alcohol abuse is costing Uganda trillions of shillings in healthcare costs and lost productivity and social and community devastation. (@WHO , 2023) Recognizing the severity of these public health and economic crises, we (UAPA), through the 5th Uganda Alcohol Policy Conference (#UAPC26), seeks to advance policy dialogue and collaborative action on alcohol control, bringing together stakeholders to examine existing challenges and identify practical approaches to reducing alcohol-related harm. Professionals, academia , religious & cultural leaders, hospitals and organizations are encouraged to take part, contribute their expertise, share practical experiences, and help shape solutions that strengthen healthier and safer communities.ce

Today, our members led by the President @donaldrukanga1 took part in a closed door dialogue during the commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child at @UNICEFUganda Offices. The dialogue organised by joint UN Agencies featured 6 teenage mothers and survivors of GBV who shared their horrific experiences and how they managed to get out of them. For some it was rape, others it was poverty and others because the parents were not available. Notwithstanding, they shared a ray of Hope as resilient survivors. For example one of them who got pregnant in P7, and has a 9 year old child is now at campus after she was supported by Remnant Generation. The Dialogue ended with recommendations from the experts and stakeholders in the room ; Government, UN Agencies and CSOs. @UNinUganda @UNAIDS_UG @UNFPAUganda

Leadership is a divine responsibility. Serve God, not the approval of people, and use your authority to protect life. Across Uganda, alcohol-related harm is leaving children hungry, students unable to complete school, women exposed to gender-based violence, families impoverished and innocent road users killed by drink-driving. The Auditor General’s FY 2024/25 report identified 216 private facilities providing inpatient mental-health services, including treatment for substance-use disorders. This reflects the growing need for prevention, regulation and quality treatment. Alcohol’s worst consequence is not drunkenness-it is preventable death. Before death, it may destroy the liver, cause cancer, damage the brain, break families and permanently harm unborn children. Its victims include people who have never consumed it. The death of 23-year-old Martha Ahumuza Murari after collapsing at a Kololo nightclub made me reflect: could effective enforcement of midnight closing hours and stronger nightlife safeguards have changed the circumstances of that night? Alcohol was not officially established as her cause of death, but the tragedy reminds us that leadership must act before more lives are lost. God holds leaders accountable not only for what they did, but also for the suffering they had the authority to prevent and chose to ignore. – at Wakiso, Uganda

When a message is so nice, you've to play it twice! 😁 Listen to our Board Chairperson Emeritus @juliet_namukasa make the case for increased excise duty on alcohol by @Movendi_Int , at the 76th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa (#RC76) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. ▶️
We have a very important communication from Asiimwe Janevive Okumu, the Senior Women teacher at Bukedi Secondary School, Tororo. ▶️ @IOGTNTOMOVEMENT
